Our eReader supports:
• PDF
• DOC
• DOCX
• XLS
• XLSX
• PPT
• PPTX
• JPEG
• PNG
• TEXT
• HTML
• BMP

No mention of eReader format. And I know they use the term eReader incorrectly.

This is big news! In one swoop B&N has become the biggest player in the market.

With their $9 price for all best sellers they now compete directly with Amazons greatest strategy, price and content.

By supporting the iPhone, BlackBerry and the PC B&N has far exceeded Amazon's client base. There are 50+ Million BlackBerry users now include iPhone and Computers.

The only sore sport is I wounder if B&N realized they bought the worst format out there...

Good to see the market and competition heating up. I would expect this will help open the Kindle platform as well.

B&N ereader

From their FAQ

"The Barnes & Noble eReader is an application used to read Barnes & Noble eBooks on your iPhone, Blackberry, Windows PC or Mac. Without it, you will not be able to read Barnes & Noble eBooks. Our eBooks are encrypted to protect the authors' work. Thus, other eBook Readers will not work with Barnes & Noble eBooks. The Barnes & Noble eReader can display styled text (italicized, underlined, etc.) and formatting as well as perform functions not found on other eBook readers. The Barnes & Noble eReader is FREE and is supported on multiple devices."

Sounds like they developed their own!!?!?!?!

Poo! They don't have Stephen Lawhead's King Raven Trilogy either. Still only on Kindle format.

Poo.

A quick check indicates that for many titles their mass market paperback prices are lower than their ebook prices. That plus yet another proprietary set of formats and DRM leaves them off my shopping list.

An 'every device' strategy that leaves out both the Kindles and the Sonys.

Bah.

And they're counting the 500,000 Google books that you can already get through the Sony Library.

I'm all for increased competition, but not for adding to the tower of eBabel.

Bah, again.

I don't think it can be seen quite that way. N-one except Amazon can create the Kindle format. That's why there is a big debacle about Amazon converting PD books to Kindle format, allowing them to be sold, then pulling the books from the Kindles.

I'm also betting that there's no way that another book publisher will have the ability to sell Sony Reader books when they have a deal with Borders. Especially if the someone is Barnes & Noble, their arch-rivals.

Sony has Border
Amazon covers Kindles
B&N will cover the rest.

If I'm wrong in anything I've just said, I'm certain it will be brought to my attention

I hate when people count the google books/public domain stuff.. it's so misleading.

This WallStreet Journal article mentions that B&N will have over 1,000,000 titles available next year and that they will be the exclusive ebookstore provider of the upcoming Plastic Logic device.

Edit: They claim 700,000 titles available now but half a million of these titles are the Google public domain titles. This means they have fewer non-PD titles available than Amazon.

Sony supports two DRMed formats - their own .lrx and ePub.

If B&N were really going with an 'every device' strategy, they'd offer at least .mobi (which Kindle supports) and ePub (which just about every other device supports). It would be hard to find an e-reading device which doesn't support one or the other.

Borders does not own Sony, is not owned by Sony, and other than selling the readers (which many other stores do as well), has no 'deal' with Sony that I am aware of.

It's like saying you can't buy the same dish-soap at Target and Walmart because they're rivals. Of course you can.

As I said, B&N is just adding to the Tower. Stop it, please, before it topples over.

The BN bookstore provides files in ePub format. Some are with DRM some are without (on a per publisher basis).
