the book text was actually all there, but some chapter numbers had been lost in prior conversions- it looks now to have beenn a poor quality pdf to epub convert, because I came across a few left-in headers/footers when reading it. It appeared to jump from chapter 65 to 70 but the story flowed OK. there was no TOC to begin with; I built one by detecting the chapter numbers.
i am still puzzled as to why the source opf has "more" content in notepad than in notepad++ |

It doesn't have more content in notepad. You just had wordwrap under view unchecked in Notepad++ so the long chapter excerpt went on forever off of the screen and gave you the illusion that it wasn't there or quite short.

ah - I see, thanks. maybe it was that ridiculous line length that choked the reader software.
