group an ARBITRARY subset of records

Dears All,
is there an easy way to group an ARBITRARY subset of records within one library of Calibre?
I mean to do it without creating a custom column, bulk populating it with a flag and add it as a Tag, THEN mass select it, which is rather a tedious task.
If not, it would be a good thing to provide Calibre with it. After all, it means to save a subset of record IDs from the developing point of view!
I also noted that, after a mass metadata & cover download, one can select and save the failed books, but the saved searched does not work any longer after restarting Calibre.
Thanks for your attention

Use the Failed list (select All) and the Metadata edit (will be in bulk mode) to set a Tag/custom column BEFORE you exit

Thanks for the answer, Ducks, but the above results I mentioned occurred after a 23+ hours-long processing

What does after 23 hours have to do with marking failures upon completing the 23 hours?

BTW Failures would imply some missing metadata.

search using <the_fieldname>:false
Works in most cases

One way to do it:
1) Create a custom column "made from other columns". Use {id} as the template.
2) Create a user category in the tag browser. This will be the name of the collection.

Then for each book you want to put in the collection.
3) click on the book line to select the book. Select more than one book if you wish.
4) click/drag the cell showing the custom column you created in step 1 to the category you created in step 2. Do not drag some other column.

You now have a user category containing the ids of the books you dragged to it. Clicking on that category will search for books with those IDs.

This technique won't be terribly speedy if you put hundreds of books into a category. Reason: the search must test each book in your library against each id in the category.

I dont understand your question. If you want to group a set of records for s given session, use the temp marker plugin. If you want that group to persist across sessions, simply add a tag to the group using the bulk metadata edit dialog, which is about as fast as it gets.

sorry, Mr. Goyal, I was unaware of the existence of the temp marker.
