can someone introduce me to the world of comics?

I'd like to check out the world of comics, but I have no idea where to start, what is available out there, and where it's good to buy stuff.

Can someone recommend some stuff and/or links?

Thanks

As you're in the Apple forums, I'm making an I assumption that you have an Apple device.

Start with the ComiXology app and their website. They have some free issues so you can explore and see what they're like without purchasing first. You can also access your account via the web. Only possible drawback is that it is all web / cloud based, so you never get a downloadable file.

Enjoy!

With regard to comics, it obviously depends on what genres you like, and whether you're into superhero stuff, something more grittily realistic, or drifting towards horror (zombies seem popular).

As a quick recommendation, Fables is very good.

Thanks, Graham! I'll be exploring this, too. I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for, but 'grittily realistic' is what resonated with me in what you wrote.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), saying that you want to check out the "world of comics" is a bit like saying you want to check out the "world of fiction" or even the "world of books". There is a comic for virtually every taste, from fiction to non-fiction, literary to porn, artistic to simplistic, realistic to fantastic, far future to distant past. The better question is what story would appeal to you in fiction and then see what comics might have similar story lines.

I've only recently got back into comics, so I can't give you too many tips - I hope someone more knowledgeable chimes in so I can get pointers too!

However, you'll probably find browsing Comixology that you're drawn to certain publishers. For example, Vertigo seems to be more off beat and mature than DC.

Also, watch out for the regular 99 cents per issue promotions which highlight a particular series. Those are a great way to try out the first couple of issues of something which then goes on to prove to be a favourite. (I now have 60-odd issues of Transmetropolitan to occupy me!)

DC Vertigo markets comics that are for a more adult audience. I really enjoyed Y Man and Books of Magic. I know the mini series introducing Books of Magic is available in ebook form and all of Y Man. I'll second the Fables recommendation. I am starting to build up my X Men franchise books, but I have read those since I was a kid and am enjoying getting caught up.

I wish the ABC books were available, I would rebuy most of those titles.

If you want to go seriously offbeat, I had a lot of fun reading Seaguy.

Free Public Domain comics. They maybe old but they still are good. Get the free iCab app and you can download to your iPad.

Haha, yes I see your point. It's just such a new thing to me that I don't even know where to start or what's out there. But now I have some pointers.

Comixology is a great app. New comics come out every Wednesday. Sometimes there are .99 cents sales, but regular prices are between $2.99 to 4.99 per digital comic. I have noticed that some series are reduced after a month, you can wait a month and get it for $1.00 or $2.00 less.

One thing to note, and as far as I know, because everything is digital, I am not sure if I actually own the comic I bought or I am licensing to read the comic. If Comixology is to shut down tomorrow, will there be a way to have a copy of all of my hundreds of digital comic books? I can do that with ebooks via Calibre but digital comics is another matter.

The comics are downloaded to your device so you have a copy. I don't know if there is something like Alf for comics.

I would assume that the comics are in a proprietary format and DRM'ed, so if Comixology shuts down, you can keep them as long as you can use your Comixology app and no longer. In the case of Apple products, you can at least migrate them if you buy a new iThingie, using the backup and restore functions. I don't know about other platforms.

You can use Comixology on your computer as well so you can have the comics and the app on multiple devices
