Any book by Robert Louis Stevenson would be good. Thanks, Paul for reminding me.

As a teen I loved stuff like Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and I started dipping my feet into science fiction with Asimov and Clarke so my recommendations would be along those lines.

Im not huge on Stephen King but when I was 14 (not all that long ago) I really enjoyed The Eyes of the Dragon
King wrote it for his daughter, wish he wrote more stuff in this style. |

Here's a selection of books all involving teenaged boys. I'd guess he'd like any of these, and they're all available as ebooks:
Holes, by Louis Sachar Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen Hatchet, by Gary Paulson Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls Jim |

The Heinlein juveniles, like Farmer in the Sky or Starship Troopers, or Tunnel in the Sky.

Davd Eddings "Belgariad" series, starts with " Pawn of Prophecy". The main character is a teenage farmboy who discovers that his aunt (who raised him) is an ancient sorceress and he is the long lost heir of a kingdom. Joined by an scruffy wizard they must flee the farm. Fun dialog and not as dauntingly thick as some fantasy can be.
