A new e-book reader from Romania: Evobook

A new device was launched yesterday by a Romanian company. The price (for now): 150 E.

More information here:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Evoli...y-166783.shtml

Given its price and the average income of Romanians, do you give it any chance at all?

My tech partner in Canada is Romanian, Mamid. I've sent the link to him to see what he thinks. He's a member here (TonySzmuk), so let's hope for some insightful info. Cheers. Neil

That depends on how many sales it needs to make it a profitable product. While Romania is a poor country, relatively speaking, it does have an affluent class. Ereaders aren't a mass-market item anywhere yet. They may become so down the road, but they are still largely in the "early adopter" category.

The hardware specs are decent. From the list of supported formats, I'm guessing the open source FBReader ebook viewer is being used as the underlying software. It does a decent but not exceptional job with ePub and MobiPocket files here, and is adequate to the task.

The bigger question may be what users will read with this. I strongly suspect it doesn't handle DRMed material.

it is except- Gajah doesnt produce that model anymore. they sold the design out to another manufacturer. The only thing Gajah is producing/selling currently is 5 and 7 inch LCD models for other brands like Elonex.

Looking at the 'company' I rate this not worthy of being mentioned.
This is the web site : http://www.evolio.ro/
Device specs: http://www.evolio.ro/pdf/prezentare_evobook_evolio.pdf

In a nut shell, they are very small and unrelated to ebook readers.
They expect to have it for sale from their shop after the 1st of December.

They will compete with http://www.prestigio.com/news/new-pr...eader-PER3162B

I think that the best chance it has comes from "Pachetul va include un numar mare de titluri din literatura romana si internationala precum si best-seller-uri ale autorilor romani contemporani.", which translates to: the package will include a large number of Romanian and international titles as well as bestsellers of contemporary Romanian authors. The first part probably refers to public domain books, but the second part will be interesting.

If I'm going to buy an ereader for my grandparents in the near future, I would like to know that there is something that they can read on it. And so far, I haven't seen many ebooks in Romanian.

They do advertise that is specially build for the Romanian market, menus, dictionaries and it even has Romanian fonts.

Since seeing is believing can somebody test this book „Povestea lui Stan Pățitul” and post here some screenshots?

The above book includes proper Romanian characters (s comma bellow and t comma bellow), which can be problematic (Amazon has fixed their fonts starting with Kindle3)
