Amazon Improves Conditions for eBook Publishers

I think this interesting article:
"Amazon have expressed their intention to increase the publishers’ share of revenues from eBooks sold at Kindle Store Amazon.

Starting from December 1, 2010 it will constitute 70%, reads the official statement. Before the company did not disclose the publishers’ share of revenues but, according to some rumors, it was 30%. To enjoy the new conditions of Amazon Kindle Store the publishers must have especially high sales..."

its not so much Amazon wanting to make things easier, it's staying pace with Apple as they continue to offer sweetheart deals to the publishers.

there is a reason Amazon no longer has that price advantage they once owned a year ago.

So next time you see that $16.99 ebook send Lord Jobs a nice thank you note.

old news?

Amazon has been paying out 70% on kindle books for a while now. I don't believe this is actually news. They still pay 30% on public domain books, but everything else is 70%

Wasn't it jobs that said "people don't read any more." Hm I wonder if he's trying to price us out, while he drops price in music.

Yeah, I'm a little confused, too. Maybe this is different from the 70% deal they offer self published authors in that traditional publishers can use it now. Although tradpubs who use the agency model already get to keep 70%.

So I think this may be old news.

Yes, this "news" was announced to publishers in June.

BTW the 70% is for US sales only.

Yep. He really blows.

And I still hate him & Apple for proposing to the publishers that they fix the price for all ebookstores so that he wouldn't have to compete with Amazon on price. The publishers were the ones who implemented it, but he was the instigator. That's why most ebooks are more expensive at Barnes & Noble than their equivalent mass market paperback (B&N discounts the paperback, but isn't allowed to discount ebooks).

Well that may be fine in the states but in the UK and Europe price-fixing is illegal and if that's what's going on then the EU will be taking very expensive action soon... otherwise just looks like the anti-Apple lobby strikes again... well, makes a change from Bill Gates Evil Empire and the Illuminati...

It was my impression that France already has laws enforcing publisher's prices for new paper books, and several publishers (HarperCollins for sure) have already implemented agency pricing in the UK.

Well in the UK the Net Book Agreement was abolished last century and books prices are now only recommended...

Maybe the Net Book Agreement was abolished, but if you're attempting to buy an ebook from HarperCollins, Hatchette UK, Penguin, Canongate, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster, the price was set by the publisher and no discounting by the retailer is allowed. Perhaps if it gets shut down in the UK, there's hope for the US too.
