Mobipocket Reader for GNU/Linux, Mac, all!

Hey Guys,

I have documented a way to take the Mobipocket Reader used in the iRex iLiad and run it on just about any Java capable platform.

Anyone who has been wanting to read their legally purchased (DRM'ed) Mobipocket formatted eBooks on an un-supported platform (GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, HP-UX, etc.) can now do so.

Here's a link to the hack:
http://www.saudette.net/projects/ind...et_Reader_Hack

Enjoy!
Steve

I think it should not be too hard to write a program which provides the navigation buttons needed and enslaving the Reader program.

Ah, your test program is already a first step towards such a program.

Shoot. I forgot. And porting one to the Reader is a non-trivial exercise. Drat.

No what we really need is mobigen for Linux. How come mobigen is Windows only ? Most online content providers use Linux and not Windows.

No, using the posted method, it's just as if you installed a Mobipocket reader on your computer.

That's why it's a cool thing to use iLiad's java viewer on a Linux PC:

Mobipocket has said it will release a Linux version of mobigen.exe, but it is not a high-priority project.

joblack, why do you think mobigen.exe could not be analyzed to crack the DRM? Mobipocket will probably not release the Linux version as Open Source. It should be as hard as cracking the Windows version.
In itself the DRM cannot be that complicated. The mobigen.exe options talk about vouchers and from the PID we can deduce that it is mainly an encryption with the PID.

If they want people to widely use Mobipocket (for both public domain books and other original books) they should make it a high-priority project: emulating mobigen with wine isn't exactly the best thing for a server.
