As for that paragraph there; isn't that what calibre was built for in the first place? If you meant full interoperability with the Sony Reader Library software on a system running Linux, then the fact that it doesn't work is the unfortunate truth for now.

the real issue is that half of their books are not available for Canadian customers and you cannot buy from other stores but kindle read only its native format.
This is utterly untrue. The Kindle uses the Mobipocket eBook format and can read any DRM-free Mobipocket book.

Because some of what you may want to read doesn't come without DRM.

What is it you like to read?

If you do want to be able to read free eBook via your local library, a Kindle is not a good fit. You will need a device such as a Sony 650 or 950, nook, nook color, Kobo or Kobo wifi an Apple iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone running Bluefire Reader app, and others. But what these all have in common is ADE which handles ePub and the time limiting DRM used by Overdrive.

Actually, erictoma sounds quite right. Most eBooks have DRM and to buy eBooks with DRM with a Kindle, you have to buy from Amazon and it seems that Canada doen't have nearly as many eBooks available as the US. So please, don't think someone is wrong just because you are.

No she is wrong because she thinks that Geo Restrictions are only in place at Amazon. She has stated on many occasions that a Canadian Sony/Kobo user can buy books from all over the world but that the Kindle store restricts them.

That is wrong. Geo Restrictions are in place across book stores. She is confusing format, Mobi and E Pub, with geo restrictions.

Kindle users can get DRM books from Amazon. Epub readers can get DRM books from many different sources. Some of those sources are less observant of geo-restrictions than others. The format limitations of the Kindle do have impact on geo-restrictions due to this limitation. And the limitation is the lack of open standards that the Kindle supports in its DRM; not just that Mobi is an inferior format to EPUB in terms of typesetting.

And of course some of the webshops that barely check if you are in the UK or not will change at some point, but I still have the choice to use another shop or two or ten.

Kindle users can get non-DRMed works from many other sources. And Amazon's e-book shop is by far the best one out there.

I have yet to see someone point to a book that was geo restricted for Amazon that was not geo restricted for another legit (ie legally operating) e-book store.

Thanks Jon. I anticipate no problems reading library books on the K3.

And to make matters more interesting, an iPad unexpectedly entered my world yesterday. I'll hafta get that Bluefire Reader for it.

No, he's not, and the details of why and the facts have been repeated many times in many threads here.

Similarly, you said:
"if you do want to be able to read free eBook via your local library, a Kindle is not a good fit. "
That's utterly and completely wrong for the many of us who read library epub books and find the Kindle to be a perfect fit.

Now, MIGHT the Kindle not be a good fit, depending on one's particular preferences and situation? Sure. But that's a very different thing to say, and it would be true, for one reason or another, for every reader, in fact every consumer item on the planet.
