Swetlana Alexijewitsch, and last year's winner Patrick Modiano, both write about global conflict events -- Modiano about WW II and Alexijewitsch about Afghanistan and Chernobyl. I wonder if the Committee is selecting winners for preserving memories of vital events within literary works, and not just for critical acclaim or popularity .... in a way, making the selection based on service to humanity (like the other awards) rather than just achieving mastery of literary technique. Seamus Heaney's selection comes to mind ...

What are you disappointed about? That it's an author you've never heard of? That's not unusual for the Nobel; they're not a popularity award.
Looking at the prize winners for the last 20 years, I've only ever heard of 7 of them, and only read works by three of those 7 (Doris Lessing, Seamus Heaney, and Günter Grass). That's primarily due to my lack of familiarity with literature in languages other than English. Last edited by HarryT; 10-08-2015 at 10:06 AM. |
