Dear God, man!! Did you really just suggest that a Sony ereader is somehow a prerequisite for just learning how to embed/use fonts with Sigil and ePubs? Have you absolutely no shame? Don't forget to tell them they must burn a Kindle in effigy as part of the ritual. Last edited by DiapDealer; 02-22-2013 at 06:36 PM. |

It is a Nook that gets the Burn. Sony is King (and one of the early EInk readers) |

You've missed the point. The idea that someone would need to buy a particular ereader (any particular ereader) before learning the mechanics of the coding necessary to embed fonts in an ePub is utterly ridiculous. The idea that a Sony would be best is just so, well... you.

You don't think HOW to do the actual coding can be demonstrated/worked out without a hardware purchase?

You can check out blocking on any display of the same aspect, but other aspects need the 'real deal'. I will agree that media, only destined for the Apple store don't need to do E-Ink tests. |

OK, clearly I'm not expressing myself very well here.
Nobody else sees anything wrong with expecting someone to buy hardware as the first step in learning how to use embedded fonts in an ePub with Sigil? It's just all me? 'Cause that's what my complaint is. The OP didn't ask how to optimize embedded fonts for eInk devices. He asked HOW to use embedded fonts in select places in an ePub. Jon's suggestion to him was essentially "first buy a Sony eInk non-backlit reader." Quote:

Sometimes it's OK to just. answer. the question. (Not that you didn't attempt to answer the question that was first asked, Ducky--and I love you for it. ) |

<p class="specialfont">This goes at the beginning of paragraphs to which you want the special font applied.</p>
This goes in the stylesheet: @font-face {font-family: yourFont; src: url('yourfontfile.ttf');} p.specialfont {font-family:yourFont, cursive} Replace: yourFont with the name you want to use for your font yourfontfile.ttf with the filename of your special font (.ttf/.otf, or .eot -for IE) cursive with whatever fallback font you want to use if the reader doesn't have or support your embedded font. Make sure you surround the name with quotes if it has any spaces in it. ======= Does that work Diap?? |

This is not a matter of HOW to code. It's a matter of how the embedded fonts look after the coding is done. A lot of publishers try to simulate the look of the pBook and some of the fonts used for the pBook do not display well on eInk. In the latest Star Trek eBook I recently purchased, the main body font embedded is Minion Pro. That didn't work well on eInk. I was able to replace the regular and italic versions with the medium versions and then it was good enough. It's things like fonts that do not look good with eInk that can cause readability issues for some. |

Never mind Jon. You clearly have no concept of "Cart Before the Horse"... and I'm tired. So you win. The OP clearly needs to buy an eInk, non-frontlit reader before even attempting to learn how to write the code necessary to utilize embedded fonts in select portions of an ePub with Sigil. It's so clear to me now.

Almost. You certainly had the stylesheet, but the question asked was:

I also included a short explanation of what they needed to do instead of just giving the stylesheet. I don't know what level of experience the OP has in coding HTML...so I thought it might help to expound upon it as well. Cheers! |
