[QUOTE=DNSB;2521985]It would nice to have a Kobo Aura for Dummies (in ebook form, of course) available. [QUOTE]

You could see what happens if you convert the PDF of the users manual .

Only ebook manual could keep up with Kobo updates making such a manual useful for more than a month or 2.

Hello all, I was not able to make Kobo driver to make bookshelves by the author name, meaning that I put author in the bookshelf field and get nothing, it makes shelves if I put custom column, and assign custom meta information for it, like #myshelves, what am I doing wrong?
Another question, SD card- with folders- library would not update for anything, without folders- gets processed right away? intended behavior?

What did you put in the bookshelf field? You should have "authors", or "#myshelves, authors" if you are using the two columns.

The values used in the field are the "lookup name". For custom columns, this always has a "#" at the start. Standard columns don't. To see the lookup name for a column, put the cursor over the heading of the column in calibre. A tooltip will be displayed with the lookup name.

Thank You!
Also is there an approximate quantity of shelves to maintain performance?
I've noticed that 30+ makes device crawl?

It has been discussed a few times. It isn't just the number of shelves, but also how many books are on the shelves. A big shelf seems to slow down opening the shelf list. At the moment I have 30 shelves on my Glo. The biggest is 10 books and the list opens within a second or two. I was doing some experiments earlier in the week and had less shelves, but a few had more then 100 books, and one had more than 200. That was taking over 40 seconds to open the shelf list.

Wow, that's a lot of clock cycles per book @ 1GHz! Something wiggy has got to be going on, or something is getting throttled for some odd reason... nearly 200ms per book is an eternity!

How about the database size? Library of books(about 1.4K) takes about 800mb on the device, database for them 260mb- it is just plain crazy bad programming.

That's a bit weird. I have had 500 books on my Kobo's and never seen the database reach 20MB. I might have a play over the weekend to see if I can duplicate this.

I still get the occasional double-page-turn on the Aura (running firmware 2.5.1), but in a distinctively visible way. I do a normal page-turn tap, then it shows half a page of text for about half a second (half blank), then the next page. I would guess that it's processing a double-tap at too short an interval to completely display the intended next page before it moves to the page after that.

I can't understand why Kobo doesn't fix this issue once and for all in the simplest possible way. There is no way that anyone intends to double-page-turn that quickly. A simple interval check in the page-turn code would solve the problem, like keyboard de-bouncers have been doing for decades. Is the lack of a fix because they get the reader code from somebody else (like Adobe) and don't have control over it?

I get that double page turn sometimes too. I also get it sleeping way sooner than any timeout is set occasionally

If anyone you wants to get rid of the Sync tile, open the database, look in the table Activity for a row with Type="Sync" and change the value of Enabled to "false". The Sync tile will disappear the next time the home screen is refreshed. The tile will come back when you do a sync and this will need to be done again.

What sqlite manager/editor can I use to do that?

I find your database size very strange. I have around 1800 books on my Aura right now using around 1.4GB and the database is around 80MB. This is about a week after doing a factory reset when removing a couple of tweaks.

As an experiment, can you copy the database to your computer and then use SQLite Database Browser or similar to compact the database and see what size reduction (if any) occurs?

Last time I did this, my database was in the 90MB range and it shrank to 83MB so I'm curious as to what your database will do.

Regards,
David

I've been using SQLite Database Browser. I've used the Windows and Linux versions but not the Mac version.

http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/

For the change davidfor suggested, go the the second tab (Browse Data) and then select Activity on the table drop down menu. Look down the Type column until you see sync, click on the true in the Activity column next to sync and set it's value to false.

I'd suggest copying the database to your computer, saving a backup copy, making the change and then copying the changed database back to your Kobo. Suspenders and belt seldom hurts.

Regards,
David
