Question V.C. Andrews?

A man in my apartment building recommended her and to start with Flowers In The Attic. Is it a good read?

I haven't thought of V. C. Andrews in years! I loved her stuff when I was in high school and read two or three of her series. I liked the series that started with Flowers in the Attic the best. I don't remember the writing, so I'm not sure how well these read as an adult, mind you, but they were great as a teenager! The stories are compelling.

If you're interested in child abuse and incest, sure! Go for it!

I read these in 8th grade (it was "the thing to do" at the time) but I wouldn't read them as an adult.

I read Flowers in the Attic and its sequel, Petals on the Wind, many years ago. They were very enjoyable, very readable, absolute trash.

Heh. I still like her stuff. But bear in mind that early V.C. Andrews books were written by V.C. Andrews, more recent stuff was not. Pretty much everything published after 1986 (when she died) was written by a man.

I'm usually concerned when an author is copyrighted.

My daughter read them at the height of their popularity so I checked them out. Trash pretty much sums them up.

A generation of girls grew up with them, even though they were adult books. I don't know what I'd feel if I read them for the first time today, but they were fascinating to me at the time. I think it's because the main character in the Flowers in The Wind books had the emotional development of a tween -- and stayed there. When you're a kid, there's something compelling about a character who operates at that same level.

It was Southern Gothic, but read very much like a fairytale -- the brave children, the betraying mother, the scary "witch"...
