Electronic Reader Etiquette

The DJ from a local radio station told her coworker off air that she didn’t appreciate him talking the company newspaper to the washroom with him because she needed it to do her job and she couldn’t bring herself to touch it after. He didn’t believe he made a faux pas and thought she was being too sensitive. They brought in on air to see what others thought.

The question got me thinking about how it relates to electronic books. I normally keep magazines in the washroom for reading but I have been known to read my PDA. Am I unusual? Sorry to go there but inquiring minds want to know….

Do you mean the toilet?

Doesn't sound very hygenic to me, I must say.

Okay, I admit to it. I take my Reader with me more times than not. Perhaps I should consider some sanitary spray?

Yes the toilet.

I know people that read their personal books but would never consider taking a library book. Just curious about the new media.

I think that's the point. It's "my reader" so I use it like I want to. May be a good way to keep other's hands off "my reader".

Yes, but not to read there. It's not a place I like to spend time. I set it down on the counter, take care of business, wash and dry my hands, and pick it up again.

I've been known to, if I get the call right in the middle of something I'm reading. But usually I don't spend that much time in there reading anything.

When I was an adolescent, extended reading brought me disapproval on the grounds that I would be better off doing the homework to which I was allergic. In self defense I locked myself in the bathroom with my books and science fiction magazines. It is a habit I only grew out of as I gained more adult freedom.

I think that even though one reads on the porcelain throne, one ought to be careful about cleanliness. If you don't know what I mean, send me US$100 via Paypal and I will send you my soon-to-be-written paper on the subject

I go there and start reading for just a little while, then I get caught up in the story and stop only when my feet remind me they're bloodless choking! Then I limp out of there and find some other spot.

You just need a more ergonomic toilet.

I had forgotten about this until this thread reminded me, but a few years after my husband and I were first married, we lived in a studio apartment. The only door inside the apartment was the bathroom door. If I wanted to read at night without keeping him awake, that's where I'd go. (I'd sit on the floor, though.)

We've since then worked out compromises about the amount of light I need to read by such that he can still sleep.

Speaking of etiquette, can we (the proverbial we) stop using the term eReader when referring to our electronic readers unless we actually mean eReader the program or eReader the book format? It makes what is said incorrect when the proper meaning of eReader is used.
