Another Freebie London guide but more specialist
London Unanchor Travel Guide - London's Historic City Wall Walk (1-2 days) by Rebecca Shaw Old London's Historic City Wall Walk Did you also know that some of that wall still exists today?! If you're planning a trip to this massive city, you will probably be told of all the usual sightseeing places to visit (& there are a lot!). If you are interested in history then this is the itinerary for you. Come with me as I take you on a walk around London's ancient city wall. Along the way, I'll point out tourist sights as well as "unknown" London which includes hidden gems down alleyways and rarely known facts about buildings and areas. == And places to eat. I did most of this when the walk was first marked (I was working in Moorgate) and it's very well done less a few Americanisms (Tower Hill Subway Station). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...cm_cd_asin_lnk http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...cm_cd_asin_lnk Here's the whole 14 http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-...isher=unanchor http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=searc...isher=unanchor |

Great finds. Got them all, thanks!
I thought that I was fairly knowledgeable about geography, but there were several places that I did not recognize. The guides for those places are probably the ones that I'll read first. When I expressed doubt, in my post about the London travel guide that I had found, that anyone would be traveling to London anytime soon, I did not think of the people who are on this site and followed the thread who live in London or its environs! |

There is more about him below. My Life And Hard Times. By James Thurber. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 51 reviews at the present moment. First It Was October 1964; Now It Is Summer of '49 Also
After I posted the book October 1964 a day or two ago, several of you mentioned having liked David Halberstam's prequel to that book, Summer of '49.
Well, I am happy to report that through my contacts with high-level people at the publisher's, diligent negotiations, and pulling out all of the stops, I have been able to secure at great effort on my part Summer of '49 at a heavy discount for Mobilereaders only! Just kidding. For whatever reason, Summer of '49 now appears and is heavily discounted; I didn't have anything to do with it; the discount is available to everyone. Here it is. Summer of '49: The Yankees and the Red Sox in Postwar America. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 101 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.99; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $2.99. http://www.amazon.com/Summer-49-Yank...ostwar+America. Book Description Halberstam’s classic #1 bestseller, about the magical summer when baseball’s fiercest rivalry captured the nation’s imagination, and changed the sport forever The summer of 1949: It was baseball’s Golden Age and the year Joe DiMaggio’s New York Yankees were locked in a soon-to-be classic battle with Ted Williams’s Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant. As postwar America looked for a unifying moment, the greatest players in baseball history brought their rivalry to the field, captivating the American public through the heart-pounding final moments of the season. This expansive story captures an era, incorporating profiles of the players and their families, fans, broadcasters, baseball executives, and sportswriters. Riveting in its blend of powerful detail and exhilarating narrative, The Summer of ’49 is Pulitzer Prize–winner David Halberstam’s engrossing look at not only a sports rivalry, but at a time when America’s very identity was wrapped up in its beloved national game. This ebook features an extended biography of David Halberstam. About the Author David Halberstam, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has chronicled the social, political, and athletic life of America in such bestselling books as The Fifties, The Best and the Brightest, and The Amateurs. He lives in New York. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-26-2014 at 06:10 PM. |

FYI: This kindle book looks short (novella length, 64 pages) and the edition oddly has a generic picture of water flowing on rocks (rather than a Thurber drawing) and a long ad for other cheap .99 cent ebooks from the same formatter (Asino Calcio). The costlier print editions contain forwards and commentary lacking in this one.
This work is also included in the costlier (~$20) Modern Library Kindle edition of Thurber that runs 1000 pages. Quote:

Before posting it, I noticed the low amount of pages but didn't think any more about it. I don't know much about fiction or the authors who wrote it. After your message I went back to the webpage for the book and noticed that all of the "most helpful customer reviews" were over 10 years old! That's strange. If I had seen that, that alone would have raised a red flag. I'm putting an update on the post. I hope that you will report the issue with the book to Amazon. |

New Batch of Free Charles River Editors titles for Kindle
Charles River Editors offers several free short Kindle ebooks every few weeks. They have a new batch now.
The titles are: -American Legends: The Life of Jim Henson -The Oracle at Delphi: The Ancient World's Most Famous Seer -The Most Influential Rock Stars of the 1960s: The Lives of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison -American Legends: The Life of John D. Rockefeller -History's Greatest Mysteries: The Unsolved Case of D.B. Cooper [this is actually a repeat, free again] -American Legends: The Life of Michael Jackson I don't have time right now to get the URLs for all of these titles, but I wanted to go ahead and get them "out there" for you while they are still free. So, I'm going to have to ask you to do a little bit of extra work this time if you want them . . . . One way to find them at Amazon is to go their advanced search page at http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=sv_kstor...ode=2735182011. Put "Charles River Editors" as the keywords. Then click on "search." After you get the search results page, go to the "sort by" box on the upper right hand corner and select "Price: Low to High." Only the first six titles are free. I know that there's bound to be a better way; I'm sure that fellow Mobilereaders will let us know all about it. (haha) (And honestly, I will appreciate that). 700 Pages of Card and other Games for Just 99 Cents! Wow!
I am a little bit leary of posting this ebook. For one thing, the ebook was not published by a major publisher. Secondly, It is not rated yet (although it was published less than 2 months ago). Too, I don't know anything about the author and didn't find anything else at Amazon written by him; in any event he certainly doesn't have the name recognition of an Edmond Hoyle. I didn't even have a chance to read much of the preview (I'm not much of a game player anyway and might not have been able to tell if the information is good or not).
But, folks, it's some 825 pages and it's cheap! All that I can say is check it out for yourself, and please do the rest of us a favor and tell us what you think. Card Games and More. By Mcneely Gibson Scott. Not rated at Amazon yet (the ebook was published less than 2 months ago). Digital list price $2.99; Kindle price now $0.99. Total number of pages--approximately 825. http://www.amazon.com/Card-Games-Mcn...Games+and+More. Book Description Ultimate Fun Games Book! Games include, Poker, Billiards, Nine Ball,Chess, Cribbage, Dominoes, and much much more! 700 pages of games! Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-28-2014 at 05:10 AM. |

Packt Publishing--All Ebooks $10 Each (Computer, et al. related)
Packt Publishing is having a sale on all of the titles that it publishes (or at least that show up on their site). Each book is $10 each.
The books are mainly computer-related books--"development" manuals, user guides to various software, and maybe programming (I'm really showing here my ignorance of computer-related things). There are a few general business titles, too. I don't know how many of you might be interested in ebooks on these subjects. Now whether or not you consider any of the books a "bargain," as the title of this thread states, depends probably on how expensive the book normally is. Well, as I'm sure that you're aware, computer books can be crazy-expensive. Anyway, whatever the normal price is, the ebook should be $10. I had never heard of Packt Publishing until running across information about this sale. I learned that they are a British company. Now the first thing that I think about when I see a company outside the United States, with me being a inhabitant thereof, is "the cost of shipment will be prohibitive." Well, to my amazement, the site says that there is "free shipping" to "US, UK, Europe and selected Asian countries" (I'm thinking that they may have warehouses in these places so the cost of shipping would not be what it normally would be if the shipment were made internationally). The ebooks are available in pdf, ePub, and mobi (think: Kindle) formats. Here's the link www.packtpub.com The sale goes to July 5, so you've still got plenty of time to procrastinate. (ha) I hope one or more of you finds something useful in this sale! |

Big Price Drop on Simon & Schuster Biography of Neil Armstrong
First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong. By James R. Hansen. Rated 4 stars from 126 reviews at the present moment. 784 pages! Print list price $20.00; Kindle price now $1.99. http://www.amazon.com/First-Man-Life...l+A.+Armstrong.
Book Description On July 20, 1969, the world stood still to watch thirty-eight-year-old American astronaut Neil A. Armstrong become the first person ever to step on the surface of another heavenly body. Perhaps no words in human history became better known than those few he uttered at that historic moment. Upon his return to Earth, Armstrong was honored and celebrated for his monumental achievement. He was also -- as James R. Hansen reveals in this fascinating and important authorized biography -- misunderstood. Armstrong's accomplishments as an engineer, a test pilot, and an astronaut have long been a matter of record, but Hansen's unprecedented access to private documents and unpublished sources and his interviews with more than 125 subjects (including more than fifty hours with Armstrong himself) yield this first in-depth analysis of an elusive American celebrity still renowned the world over. In a riveting narrative filled with revelations, Hansen vividly re-creates Armstrong's career in flying, from his seventy-eight combat missions as a naval aviator flying over North Korea to his formative transatmospheric flights in the rocket-powered X-15 to his piloting Gemini VIII to the first-ever docking in space. These milestones made it seem, as Armstrong's mother, Viola, memorably put it, "as if from the very moment he was born -- farther back still -- that our son was somehow destined for the Apollo 11 mission." For a pilot who cared more about flying to the Moon than he did about walking on it, Hansen asserts, Armstrong's storied vocation exacted a dear personal toll, paid in kind by his wife and children. For the thirty-six years since the Moon landing, rumors have swirled around Armstrong concerning his dreams of space travel, his religious beliefs, and his private life. In a penetrating exploration of American hero worship, Hansen addresses the complex legacy of the First Man, as an astronaut and as an individual. In First Man, the personal, technological, epic, and iconic blend to form the portrait of a great but reluctant hero who will forever be known as history's most famous space traveler. |
