Pricing

From the B & N Boards (as an example of pricing discrepancy):

All these are Stephen King EBooks with differences in the 2 stores.

The Stand - B&N $40 / Amazon $7.19
The Shining - B&N $28 / Amazon $6.39
Salem's Lot - B&N $28 / Amazon $6.39
Night Shift - B&N $28 / Amazon $6.39
Carrie - B&N $26 / Amazon $6.39

This is intolerable. I was a firm supporter of the nook, but plan to cancel my pre-order unless B & N address these issues in the next 10 days.

FWIW, that's probably the most extreme example you'll be able to find. The pricing on a lot of King books is very high at every store except Amazon.

You are probably correct, but the discrepancy is extreme. As another example, The Yankee Years by Tom Verducci is $9.99 at Amazon and $21.56 at B & N.

It'll be interesting to see what B&N do. They've never been known for great prices on pbooks so for them to heavily discount, and sometimes lose money on, ebooks would be a fairly major change for them. If they want to compete they'll at least have to price as well as Sony seems to be doing now (not that they're always great compared to Amazon).

I don't think so. Here are some of the other biggest offenders, from the same thread at the B&N forum:

Dune $7.99 at Amazon, $13.60 at B&N

Sookie Stackhouse Set
Kindle: $29.90
Nook: $51.13

Descartes' Bones:
Amazon for Kindle: $9.99
B&N ebook: $20.86

Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood
Kindle: $9.99
Nook: $20.80

Team of Rivals by Doris Goodwin: Amazon $8.42, BN $16.80
The Soloist by Steve Lopez: Amazon $10, BN $20.76
"Ayn Rand & the World She Made": Amazon $16.38, B&N $28.00

And there are dozens and dozens of books where Amazon is $9.99, B&N is $12-15.

Yes, and as I said the King books are a much more extreme example than most. Never said other books weren't more than Amazon.

The B&N forums are getting pummeled with their over priced ebooks and no member discounts. There are several threads on this .... Wonder if and when they'll respond. The admins are weak in responding to anything (unfortunate)

It's also noteworthy that those King books are cheaper at eReader.com, which is owned by B&N. Yes, the eReader.com prices aren't as low as Amazon, but they're comparable to Sony and are much lower than B&N. Add to that the available eReader.com discounts and credit deals, and the difference becomes more glaring.
B&N can't even match their own prices!

It is interesting that Ereader.com and Fictionwise have better prices that B&N.

If I had the nook I would not pay the higher price, and would shop elsewhere.

At least you would have that option, and B&N maybe would get the hint that their are overpriced.

Yes, if/when B&N provides an option to request a title, I fully plan to use it to request title prices match those of other B&N companies. In the meantime, I will use sites like Inkmesh and AddAll to price out my books and buy them where they are cheapest, convenience and "full support" be damned.
