I can't recall it ever having seen a down arrow on Windows - like you I've often wondered why not, also wondered why it displays current library name - rather than a fixed title. The current library name is shown in the title bar on Windows, IMO a better place for current library name would be in the status line, just before the [n books, m total]. Hmmm - memory cell #4 just suggested we've had this discussion before. BR |

I have never connected any devices to calibre, and I can't recall ever seeing a down arrow on the library icon in the main tool bar. Yet I see a flyout arrow in the book context menu.

I believe it depends on your Qt theme.
The library icon pops open the submenu whether you click the icon or the arrow. |

From your screen shot, I don't think they are the same button. That icon is used for three different buttons. One is "Choose Library" which is used to create or change the current library. The tooltip for this will show the library name and number of books. Clicking it should prompt to create a library. This should have the bigger arrow. The second is the "Copy to library". You can put this on the toolbar, but it only shows if you have more than one library. This doesn't have an action for clicking the button, so it should have the smaller arrow. The third is part of the "Location Manager" button. This is only there when the device is connected. It has two or three parts that look like separate buttons, but they are one item in the toolbar. The parts are the library, the device and the secondary storage in the device. Clicking each of these changes the list to that location. Each part has it's own drop down menu, so they should have the menu-type arrow. The screenshot with the device should be the last button. I can't tell which it is for the other screenshot. But, my memory of the library button at home on Win10 is that it has a visible arrow for the menu. |

If you use the calibre interface style then buttons that always popup menus have no arrow. If you use a non-calibre interface style, then depending ont he style, such buttons may or may not have a small arrow in the bottom right corner.
As for why it is different when a device is connected, it is because clicking on it no longer popups a menu instantly, instead clicking on it shows the books in the calibre library. |
