Or - is this the Encyclopedia Galactia?
Or - does it have "Don't Panic" on the cover? Sorry - with a thread title like that I couldn't resist. |

It sounds more like they're trying to build the Final Encyclopedia.

This seems like an outdated model, although I am sure there are differing opinions on this.
On the one hand, we have the internet. Its open to one and all. Put up your server or rent space or get it for free. Then you can host what you want. To find content you can google or bing or visit wikipedia. For specialized content we have services like google scholar. Now, this announcement goes the other way. One single repository. In order to get in you have to be in the in-crowd; available through an official library. Sounds like THE source for canonical knowledge, right??? I know that I may be leaking my political leanings here, and I know that there are reliability issues with the lawless internet, but I don't think this centralized repository is really the way to go. Then again, as long as no one forces it to be the sole official knowledge source, I guess I should just view it as another choice. So we'll just watch how things develop. |
