Young Adult Hancock, H. Irving: West Point Omnibus. v5. 3rd Aug 2011

An omnibus edition of the juvenile series "Dick Prescott at West Point" (originally published 1910-1911), following the adventures of Dick Prescott and Greg Holmes during their four years at West Point military academy. This four-book series directly follows on from the "High School Boys" and "High School Boys Vacation" series posted previously, and is a "parallel" series to the "Dave Darrin at Annapolis" and "Young Engineers" omnibuses. Please refer to the description of the "High School Boys" series for more information about the series and the author.

The books in this omnibus are:

Book 1: "Dick Prescott's First Year at West Point" or "Two Chums in the Cadet Gray"

Book 2: "Dick Prescott's Second Year at West Point" or "Finding the Glory of the Soldier's Life"

Book 3: "Dick Prescott's Third Year at West Point" or "Standing Firm for Flag and Honor"

Book 4: "Dick Prescotts's Fourth Year at West Point" or "Ready to Drop the Gray for Shoulder Straps"

too uplifting, i feel all inspired to join the army and go fight

It is full of truly "uplifting" quotes. One of my favourites, from the blub of book 2 is:

This story will be a rare treat, one that will make the blood bound faster in the arteries of any real American boy. A narrative of surpassing interest and thrilling adventures in the military cadet's life is promised.

Makes me proud to be, er, British

Books of this type, for both boys and girls, were published by the thousands between about 1890 and 1920.

I'm not making fun of them, by the way. I collect these juvenile "series books" and think they're absolutely wonderful. It's great to think that there really was a time - and not all that long ago - when people could write the kind of stuff I quote above and actually mean it. Imagine the reaction you'd get if you said that kind of thing to a teenager today?
