This is true. On the iPad I would probably stick with Stanza and the Kindle app and continue buying my books from Amazon.

Exactly. There are other APPS for reading books.

I doubt I was ever going to get a DX, but the iPad definitely has made me want a tablet of some kind, and killed any interest I have in a large screen e-ink device. Though the iPad has a few things missing that keep me from buying it at launch vs. waiting and seeing what other's put out and what they tweak in the 2nd generation iPads etc.

Anyway, for a big screen device, I'd much rather have something I could do full internet, movies, games, magazines in color, comics in color, newspaper etc. rather than something that's soley a reader.

I wouldn't read often/long enough at one time on it to care about the benefits of e-ink in terms of eye strain and battery life. And also a lot of reading would be academic related where I need to be able to highlight and jot notes, and more importantly to be able to flip through quickly, and e-ink just isn't good for that kind of reading.

I'd keep my Kindle for novel reading though. Not sure if I'd replace it if it broke--would probably try reading on whatever tablet I had at the time for a while and see if I missed the Kindle for novel reading in bed etc.

Ipad is definitely an interesting device. I'm going to finally play around with one, as my coworker is bringing hers to work on monday.

It's more tempting than any random shiny new gadget on the market even though my initial impression was that it will not a solve any problems that I have right now. I tend not to be an early adopter anyway.

How did your colleague get hold of one way ahead of everyone else?

I am not even considering the iPad simply because it doesnt have an e-ink style screen. Reading on a backlit display causes serious eyestrain surprisingly fast.

After months/years of deliberation, I finally decided and placed my order for a Kindle on the weekend and had it delivered today.

The reason I bought the Kindle DX despite the Apple Ipad is that I waited for the iPad to be announced before making my decision and once I saw the specs and configuration, I realised that the iPad was simply another PC (albeit a tablet PC) and that was the deciding point for me.

I have tried reading books on a PC, on large sceens, on laptops, on netbooks but I cannot read for sustained periods on those devices, and even if I could, the battery life is measured in hours not days.

For me an e-book reader is a specialised device and that fits my needs. I want something to read books on, largely reference/text books but also novels and the like. I dont care about the audio capabilities of the device, only its ability to do sustained reading on.

Now if the PDF capabilities are increased and the ability to add notes to documents is included, it would be the perfect device but for now, e-readers cannot be compared with PC type devices for sustained reading.

I still find it weirdly interesting that so many are comparing non-eReaders to true eReaders like the Kindle family. I think iPad has its niche but cannot truly be compared to nor compete with the Kindle. As usercom wrote above, Kindle is a true, dedicated eReader. It's not trying to be anything else, other than what its original intention is. I think it's great that Amazon will continue to upgrade and improve its capabilities, but I hope they don't start trying to make the Kindle everything to everyone. I, too, have tried to read on my PC but don't find it a good experience. And the battery life is a great point, too. So much more I could write about, but I'll keep my comments short. I wish I could see more folks comparing iPad to its peers like other slate/tablet PCs.

The problem solved, Amazon also has a Kindle for IPad.
