Downloading free books
I just got my first e-reader the other day and am busy loading it up with public domain books. It's getting tedious, and I'm wondering if there are any sites that offer a batch download so I could get, say, all of an author's books, or all books in a certain category, in my desired format in one fell swoop. I know PG offers a torrent download of a CD's worth of books, which I tried, but that's so much to wade through as to be just as tedious as downloading one by one. Any suggestions?

If you go to http://www.munseys.com/mobi/ you can go to seperate genre pages and use downthemall to download several at once. That and http://www.mobipocket.com (the free book section) as well.

You may also wish to check out www.manybooks.net and www.feedbooks.com.
I bought my ebook reader to read Project Gutenberg in bed, and I've never regretted it. |

We don't offer batch downloads, but we do have the best formatted free books on the 'net.
Our own members format each book, checking for errors, deleting extraneous pages, and format them for individual devices. Click on the link below for more info..... |

Thanks for the recommendations. I've been able to find a plethora of sources for free books, but they all seem to require downloading one book at a time. I will check out downthemall.
Desertgrandma, I have indeed happily found a few hundred books here to download--I especially like the omnibus volumes (e.g., Tom Swift, Sherlock Holmes). Right now I am still in the process of accumulating books, rather than reading them, but the ones I've briefly looked at from this site are indeed really nicely done, and I applaud the people who have put so much work into them. |

Manybooks I highly recomend.
The only place your going to find big batch's is on the darknet doing torrents. Which depending on your philosophy and ethics can be either a good thing or a bad. Just remember from what I have seen on many posts here, it's not illegal to down load that torrent. Just to upload it. Feel free to PM me for help, advice, etc. |

It would be legal in many countries, for example in Poland, if you were downloading it using HTTP, for example from mediafire, rapidshare or megaupload. If you're using torrent, you're sharing parts of the file you already downloaded with others, ie. uploading it to them, and that part is illegal in most countries.
