I don't know about the flashing orange light, but many strange problems reported here have been due to a low battery level. Try giving it a full charge, at least four hours, and preferably with a wall charger. You'll find many posts advising against using the USB cable for charging.

If you are limited to using the USB cable, you'll need to give it even more time and be sure the computer doesn't go into sleep mode. That'll shut down power to the USB port and actually discharge your reader battery rather than charging it.

If the reader battery is very low, it may take an hour on the USB cable to even get the red light to come on. Unfortunately, due to the way the reader needs to communicate with the host PC via the USB cable, you may not be able to get the battery to charge if it is completely discharged. The reader needs a little power to start things off. In this case, a wall charger is the only remedy.

I hope this helps.

It likely is a battery issue. Give it a long charge - with the wall charger, if available.

Just to add:
get a wallcharger with a round barrel. Using a wall charger with USB plug won't work. Chargers for PSP also work and are a lot cheaper than the official one for the eReader.
