MS Office 12 to natively support PDF

This is huge news for all PDF skeptics among us. According to Brian Jones who works with the MS Office team, the next release of Microsoft Office, currently code-named Microsoft Office "12", is going to natively support the Adobe PDF format. In other words, in future you'll be able to use Office to convert these yucky PDF documents into more widely supported formats.

Update: Laurens correctly pointed out that "support" goes only so far as to Microsoft implementing PDF export. Not exactly what we wanted.

Export only

Like OpenOffice, MS Office 12 will only support exporting documents to PDFs. You cannot edit or manipulate existing PDFs.

That is, however, what most business users want, without having to pay extra for.

There are free solutions for generating PDFs. For example, PrimoPDF.

I like pdf995. It acts like a printer driver, but you print to a pdf file. It does open your browser and pop up a web page when you print, but no big deal. The printed output really works. It's perfect for programs that have things like design diagrams, and which can't output to a file for someone else to see the diagram electronically.

Adobe will like this fine. I can assure you that Microsoft must license this from Adobe in order to sell the feature. The fact that Adobe gets a little cash for every Office license sold will do them well.

There is no requirement to pay Adobe for a license to create a program to either write or read PDF documents. When I was a Macromedia, I worked on the projects to add support, first export then import, for PDF in Macromedia FreeHand (v5.5/Mac back in '95 was the first released with PDF Export). We wrote our own code and there was no need to pay Adobe any license fee.
