Recent thick books I've enjoyed include The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton and Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton. Two rather different books but both certainly qualify length-wise.

Thanks Yayyap. It may take me some time to get to these books, but read them I will, definitely.

Unbroken is a very interesting and very well written book. It's about part of WWII that little is known and should be known.

I heartily second this. I had something of the same prejudice about Victorian novels [mostly unfounded] but I really enjoyed this. Enough so that I read every Alan Quartermain book I could find. He's the main character, by the way. I highly recommend it

I've got a set of three books that are very good. It is the Century Trilogy by Ken Follett.

1. Fall of Giants (960 pages)
2. Winter of the World (928 pages)
3. Edge of Eternity (1120 pages)

The third book is due out in September sometime. These are big books.

<shrug> If you avoid novels because their social attitudes differ from current societal norms, you're cutting yourself off from an awful lot of extremely good books. As L.P. Harley's novel said, "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."

I agree wholeheartedly with you. And I don't consider it my loss for not getting past these issues.

Won't you believe it, I'm yet to read a book by Ken Follet. Fall Of Giants might be a BoTM at a group in Goodreads, so there you are.

If you want to read one of Follett's books, I'd suggest "The Pillars of the Earth". An excellent read.

As I say, you're missing out on some great books if you decide that you wouldn't read, say, "Tom Sawyer", because it's "racist" by modern standards. I think it is your loss. You are of course welcome to disagree .
