Faster than a speeding bullet...
...in fact faster than the speed of light. According to Italian experimenters it is possible for something to travel faster than the speed of light - they've made it happen to a neutrino. If the results are confirmed they would appear to undermine a central plank of special relativity. Story here.

Yes I'm following this with interest....it could change everything if verified.

The neutrinos beat the light by 0,000.000.060 seconds!

Yes, this could be very significant if confirmed.
It appears they worked very hard to assure the results were right, but still it goes against everything modern cosmology is built on. Will definitely need independent replication to confirm it. |

This, if proven true, is a fascinating discovery.
Special relativity stated that the faster you move through space up to the speed of light, the slower you move through time. Does this mean that the neutrinos are going back in time or that Einstein had it wrong and neutrino movement is the ultimate speed? In Dan Falk's book, Time The Curious Dimension, he mentions two physicists who have proposed experiments to actually go back in time. I imagine they are paying close attention to this. |

Also, why didn't this discovery make the front pages? It was on page 11 of today's Washington Post behind an article on rising tolls on local highways. |

The OPERA measurement is at odds with well-established laws of nature, though science frequently progresses by overthrowing the established paradigms. For this reason, many searches have been made for deviations from Einstein’s theory of relativity, so far not finding any such evidence. The strong constraints arising from these observations makes an interpretation of the OPERA measurement in terms of modification of Einstein’s theory unlikely, and give further strong reason to seek new independent measurements. |
