Baen
I am begining to explore some baen authors and I have picked up on David Weber. Don't get me wrong he is an excellent writer that develops his characters well, its just that he spends a lot of his time describing people/places and things. Which one of the Baen authors is the oposite - in other words his/her characters spend most of their time doing things and less time being described?

I've been a big fan of John Ringo since I first read his book Ghost. It's not one of his best, but it's action packed and the following books in the series are really good as well.
His two best series imo are the Empire of Man series co-written with David Weber, and the newest Live free or Die set of books. Though I say those two are the best his other series are very good as well. You can get all except the Live Free or Die series from BaenCD at http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/1...wsThatCatchCD/ |

i've become a huge fan of Larry Correia at baen.
Monster Hunter International Monster Hunter Vendetta Monster Hunter Alpha - just released Hard Magic i'll also be purchasing Dead Sixx when released. he describes guns more than people, more in MHI than in the others but when there is a gun involved you're sure to get a good feel of what it is and does. regardless of the light gun porn his books are all action and exciting reads. i've recommended them to a bunch of people and i haven't heard a bad thing yet from anyone. of course i'm biased because i like it so much. |

I think Travis S. Taylor does a good job. His novels "Warp Speed" and "The Quantum Connection" (a sequel to Warp Speed" are very well written, and both are available free from Baen.

My personal favourites right now are the Liaden Universe(r) books from Sharon Lee & Steve Miller. But for pure action, the Lois McMaster Bujold books, especially the earlier Miles Vorkosigan books.

I see Robert E Howard on the list of Baen authors. He is hands down the best writer of action ever. Conan spends a whole lot of time "doing things."

It's more space opera, but I've enjoyed the A. Bertram Chandler reprints
http://www.webscription.net/p-1319-t...actic-rim.aspx http://www.webscription.net/p-1415-first-command.aspx Those are the first two. The rest of the series is apparently on the site, but they've been bundling them (and reprinting them) |

LMB's Vorkosigan books, of course. But I agree with siraks. I'm halfway through Monster Hunter Interntional and I'm loving it!
Yeah, Weber's books get a tad info-dump-y, don't they Um... give Flint's 1632 books a go too. |

The Vor series is exceptional! It is action throughout most of them. A Civil Campaign is the only one that is not primarily action, I think. Bujold is an excellent writer.

Having just re-read the entire Lee&Miller Liaden series, I recommend it highly. It's not particularly action oriented, but the development of a consistent and interesting universe is well done, with good characters, and the books are a "good read".

Another vote for the Vorkosigan saga!
I happen to really like Weber's work personally... if you're stuck on Basilisk Station, my advice would be to skip the middle third or so. The Honor Harrington series gets significantly better after the first one. Also, the Starfire series is excellent and involves significantly more action. I also found that I really liked Eric Flint's work, including 1632 and the Belisarius series, which is a collaboration between Flint and David Drake. Great alternate history stuff there, with some cool sci-fi overtones. Also, if you don't mind slightly softer sci-fi, Elizabeth Moon's Heris Serrano series is also quite good. The first book is a bit slow (including a rather drawn-out sequence involving a foxhunt...) but after that they're really quite engaging with some great political themes and examinations of the social results of technology... much like the Vorkosigan books, in fact. |
