An Adobe eReader
I've just been wondering why a company liked Adobe hasn't shown signs of getting involved in the race to produce the best eReader.

They own all the rights to PDF formatting, features and so on. I guess, in a sense all of the top ereaders with PDF functionality (Kindle, Sony, iRex etc) have to strike a deal with Adobe at some point

Just a thought...

Maybe sticking with creating software is less of a headache for them. No multiple formats, geographic restrictions, content acquisition and upkeep etc. to deal with.

One already exists; you're sitting in front of it. But if you're talking about a dedicated device, then you're talking about something in the size (and price range) of the DR800. At that price it's more cost effective to get a laptop.

Note that PDF has been an open standard (ISO 32000-1) since 2007. Adobe have no more rights to it than anyone else any more, although they undoubtedly do have the expertise.

Why don't they build a reader? Probably for the same reason that Microsoft don't build PCs - there's more money to be made from licensing their software to the people who do build them.

Adobe has proven to be one of the few companies who stick with what they are good at!

I think they have their hands full with the 20 odd programs (photoshop, dreamweaver etc) they have and probably make more from licensing the technology out than they would from getting involved in the hardware in the increasingly saturated e-reader market.

I would agree with this one. They stick to creating software i guess.

Adobe's business primarily consists of providing content creation and distribution solutions. They are probably making more on the licensing for their ereader software per unit than the many companies selling the devices.

Of course, Google and Apple have a lot on their plate, and they certainly want a slice of the market share.

What if someone invented a smaller affordable laptop that worked with eInk and had long battery life. Would that be the end of the eReader?

Both Kindle and Sony Reader are using Adobe's Mobile Acrobat library to display PDF files.
