Naming the baby
Shall we have a new tag for the Kpw-Gen2 device (K6) ?
Pro: It is a different processor (i.MX6) than the existing K5 devices (i.MX508). It uses a much newer kernel (series 3.0 rather than 2.6) with a much newer toolchain and C library (see the Amazon source release bundle). Con: It breaks with our tradition of using the major version number of the firmware series (all three devices run series 5.x firmware). Comments in this thread please. FWIW, I went with pw2 for now in KindleTool. Also, the Fire runs/used to run a FW version 6.something, so K6 was a bit ambiguous on that front too.

So we ask for a prefix: PW2 for our topic index filter then? (With additional PW2 page in the master index system.) I am sure we will end up with pw2 specific topics here, what with hardware and system's differences. |

I personally like K6, but since we broke it with paperwhite, pw2 seems good...

K6 reminds me of AMD CPUs!

PW2. Or actually "K5-PW2". Then we could also ask to have "K5-PW" (or "K5-PW1") and "K5-Touch" (or "K5-T") as labels for those particular devices.
K6 would be a horrible choice IMO, because the device is *not* a K6 in any way. We regularly have that confusion when people speak of "K4 Touch" or "K5 non-touch". And it usually takes at least a couple of posts to even find out which device people are really talking about. Using the FW major version as labels - possibly with finer-grained "specialization" - is the only sensible option IMO. |

Naming new PW as PW2 is a bit rash. Amazon can present new model in next year as "Kindle Paperwhite 2".
Maybe, PW2013 or, informally, PW13. Or by platform/board codename: PWario/PWinot. |

K5-PW1, K5-PW2, K5-Touch Would be a good, over-all, improvement. I hate to think of the prefix renaming chore that would present, but then I am not a moderator. |

Also these two are so similar that we need a single prefix for them. Should K5 label stay as a synonym of KT and PW1? |

There wouldn't be any real need to split the "K5" prefix - it would simply stay there, meaning "any device with FW 5.x". That would also drastically reduce the need to re-label threads. If one finds that some thread really only concerns a particular device, such re-labeling could be done when that is noticed.
I do agree with eureka though. Amazon has a terrible policy for naming their devices, so it could well be that they decide to launch a "PW2" in the future. I think they currently call them the "new" and "previous" PW So shall we go for PW2012 and PW2013 or so? The only concern I have is that tags might get overly long and complicated at some point in time... Dunno. |
