Smile Set title sort to be the same as title

Is there any way I can tell Calibre to make the title sort field the same as the title in the metadata whenever I add a new book? It always strips off leading 'A's and 'The's and sticks them at the end of the sort title.

I prefer books beginning with 'A something' to show up under 'A' and books beginnign 'The something' to come up under 'T'. So far I have had to do this manually for each book but I am sure there must be some clever way to do this globally.

I have had a look at the forum and can't find an answer but please forgive me if this has already been dealt with and I have missed it.

Any help or links to solutions greatly appreciated.

There is Preferences: Tweaks (at the bottom):
You want to change this one to suit your tastes:
# Control sorting of titles and series in the library display

(values are in the note shown)

Thank you very much. As with most things, it is easy when you know how.

It doesn't work for me. (Using Calibre 1.8)

I set the title sort to "strictly_alphabetic" twice, but the words "The" and "An" still are ignored in the title sort. I want all "T" words to be sorted under "T" and "A" words under "A".

My title sort looks like the following:

The American Crisis
The American Language
American Legends
The Anatomy of ...
Archimedes
The Argument for ...
Aristotle
A Brief History of Time
Cicero
The Civilisation of the Renaissance
Classical Archaeology

... and so on.

Can anyone solve this problem?

That is not a problem
That is a Library Order (IMHO proper) sort
(the topic keyword is underlined)

I see it as a problem because I can't change it to "strictly_alphabetic" -- as is supposed to be taken care of by changing the words from "library_order" in the Caliber Preferences Tweaks section. If this tweak doesn't change the order, how can it be changed?

Looking at the tweak "title_series_sorting" it says at the end
Quote:
Control title and series sorting in the library view. If set to
'library_order', the title sort field will be used instead of the title.
Unless you have manually edited the title sort field, leading articles such as
The and A will be ignored. If set to 'strictly_alphabetic', the titles will be
sorted as-is (sort by title instead of title sort). For example, with
library_order, The Client will sort under 'C'. With strictly_alphabetic, the
book will sort under 'T'.
This flag affects Calibre's library display. It has no effect on devices. In
addition, titles for books added before changing the flag will retain their
order until the title is edited. Double-clicking on a title and hitting return
without changing anything is sufficient to change the sort.

Hmm, I just tried it, but the double-clicking caused the viewer window to open -- as before, in the narrow format I'm trying to get away from -- therefore preventing me from pressing Enter (on a PC -- Return is on a Mac). It had no effect on the title sort. Apparently whoever wrote that recommendation didn't try it out to see if it worked, at least on the current version of Calibre I'm using (1.8).

Is there any other possible fix for this situation?

Select books.
Tap 'E' (bulk mode)

Tick the box 'Update Title sort'
OK

I had the same problem, I found how to change it in tweaks but can't get the changes to take effect.
I have tried to follow the instructions to 'select all books' (by holding down control & dragging the mouse down the page) as there does not seem to be a 'select all' box.
But where is this 'Update Title sort' box that I'm supposed to tick?
Thanks

And before someone helpfully points out that this an old thread. Yes it is isn't it!

Select all is Ctrl-A for MOST programs
FWIW The 'box' in Calibre is the space above the row number

Once selected: tap "E" : Tick Update Title sort (near the bottom, on the left:OK

Thank you so much I really appreciate this. But I'm still stuck I've attached two screen grabs one of the top left & one of the bottom. No matter where I click nothing changes.

@emmabee - try this: after selecting all the books, click the Edit metadata icon in the toolbar (second from left), the 'Update Title Sort' checkbox is on the 'General' tab, just above the Cover options.

Thank you everyone sorry I'm being thick

I just found that by accident I think, screengrab attached. But clicking apply doesn't change anything & the box just reappears. I can't do it individually for every book. I must be doing it wrong

EDIT
I went back into tweaks & found it had reverted to library order. I've fixed it now. I'm dyslexic so fixing the order the books are in is a life saver, thank you all so much. I really appreciate your patience.
