Fuzzy, faint images

I have converted a Nook book to an epub to display on my Kindle PW2 using duokan. The book contained many images of symbols (b/w line drawings). All the images on the Nook app on my android tablet look fine, sharp with good contrast. The generated epub on the Kindle displays the images as very fuzzy and faint, sometimes hardly discernible.

Is there a way to preserve the high image quality in Calibre during the conversion process?

Use the 'Tablet' output profile. That will not resize images.

Please note that even the "tablet" profile does some resizing (at least with calibre 3.39)
Code:
ebook-convert a.html a.epub --output-profile tablet
...
Rescaling image from 1561x12794 to 1217x9981 table-0003.png
In this post they suggest a way to tweak the resize of cover images.
Does anyone know if there is something similar that works for all images?

True. Even though the tooltip says "Intended for generic tablet devices, does no resizing of images" it actually resizes to 10000x10000 pixels or less.
