I'm not sure about all the Kindles, but the Kindle Touch can indeed be turned completely off by holding the power button down for 7 seconds (I think that's the right time). Pressing the power button again will cause it to boot up.

No, despite what the Kindle User Guide says, that's just sleep mode with a blank screen. You'll note that when you subsequently press the power button, it wakes instantly; it doesn't reboot. The previous poster is absolutely correct in saying that there's no way to switch off a Kindle.

I guess you could let the battery drain itself, when there is no juice left I'm sure the Kindle will be turned off.

Hey kids!

Just one question. Are there any news from Sony or Eink right now?

If not: Why don't we simply chat about our general experiences with electronic handheld deveices in this thread? Let's talk about the Amazon Kindle. And battery life. And pressing the power button.

Because that's something people really would like to read right now.

Hold it down even longer and it will indeed reboot after you press the power button a second time.

So what do you call the state that it's in before you hit the power button the second time and cause the reboot?

And while we're on topic, what do you call the state that it's in when the battery has been completely used up and the screen goes white and nothing happens when you press the power button?

The success or failure of a device depends on how much demand there is. Eink has the advantage of lower battery consumption, but a point has been made that the differences in battery life are not as big as advertised, therefore lowering the advantages of eink over LCD.

Whether an eink device turns off or goes into sleep mode is important for the power management. If you just read for 6 hours straight on the weekend you are better off with a device that turns off because it will not consume power the rest of the week. If you read just a few pages at a time you are better off with a device that goes into sleep mode because it uses less power waking up than it does booting up.

How much do you think it will cost? I figure if a 9.7 inch e-reader is $350, and the Sony ready has a screen that is twice as large, then it will cost at least twice as much. Further we will pay for the new flexible screen technology. I do not think that it will cost less than $1000. Given that it is a name brand, it could cost $1500.

It will not succeed if it costs as much as a highend computer. I think it must be less that $1000 to be successful and more like $500-600 range maybe $700 but we will see if they productize it before someone else does.

That's crazy talk.

Even the chrome pixel doesn't cost that much. And everyone agrees it's an expensive concept product.

But I can easily see why it would cost over $500. Maybe $750?

Where do you get the price that you start from?

If you start with the Sony 6" reader that costs $130, and the new one would be 4 times bigger, and the price scales as well, it goes up to $420, including the brand name.

The question would be what is the difference between the production of a glass screen and a flexible screen.

My original price of $350 is that of the Onyx Boox 92 in the US. I suspect that it is more difficult to make a larger panel than a smaller one. Further, the 6" readers sell well. The market for this larger reader may be more akin to that of the Kindle DX or Onyx Boox 92. The smaller market will result in a higher price. (However it could have a very large market if students and professionals who read pdfs want the device. I personally have been looking for such a device for years.)

I do not see the device costing less than $1,000. I will still buy it.
