Jack Lilburne, governor of Conyhall Young Offenders’ Institution, is generally regarded as a pillar of his community.

He has a respectable job, a beautiful house and a close-knit family – and he’s recently been awarded an OBE.

So it’s shocking and puzzling to everyone, not least Superintendent Gil Mayo and the rest of the Lavenstock police force, when Jack is killed by a car bomb on his own front drive.

Initially, it seems that several of the ex-inmates with whom Jack worked could be suspects.

Soon, however, it becomes clear that there’s more to the case than a young offender with a straightforward grudge against the governor.

When a second victim is discovered, similarities to a historical murder case become obvious.

In order to solve the investigation Mayo and his team realize that they will have to dig deep into Jack Lilburne’s surprisingly shadowy past…

'A Death of Distinction’ is an expertly plotted detective mystery that is perfect for fans of Peter James and Ian Rankin.

Even quiet community of Lavenstock isn't immune from the threat of drugs and his team are getting nowhere in combating the town’s problem.

As both Mayo and DI Abigail Moon plunge into the investigation of this murder, and as more and more of the unsavoury details of the victim's private life are revealed, it becomes not simply a question of who had a motive to kill him, but who didn't.

Things become more and more complicated as Abigail’s personal life begins to interfere with the murder investigation as a man from her past becomes involved in the case.

As Mayo and Abigail start to uncover the truth, it becomes clear the murder was not an end, but a beginning - the first link in a chain that will lead to more deaths...

No Game for a Dame is the first in the Maggie Sullivan mystery series by M Ruth Myers. It's a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about the next 1 1/4 days, before going up to $3.99, which appears to be its normal price.

Just as an aside, the third in this series, which was a Countdown deal a while back, was a finalist for a 2014 Shamus Award for Best Indie PI Novel.

Quote:
A .38, a nip of gin and sensational legs get Depression-era private investigator Maggie Sullivan out of most scrapes – until a stranger threatens to bust her nose, she’s hauled in on suspicion of his murder and she finds herself in the cross-hairs of a crime boss with connections at City Hall.

Moving through streets where people line up at soup kitchens, Maggie draws information from sources others overlook: The waitress at the dime store lunch counter where she has breakfast; a ragged newsboy; the other career girls at her rooming house.

Her digging gets her chloroformed and left in a ditch behind the wheel of her DeSoto. She makes her way to an upscale bordello and gets tea – and information – from the madam herself.

A gunman puts a bullet through Maggie’s hat. Her shutterbug pal on the evening paper warns her off. A new cop whose presence unsettles her thinks she’s crooked. Before she finds all the answers she needs, she faces a half-crazed man with a gun, and a far more lethal point-blank killer.

If you like Robert B. Parker's hard boiled Spencer series and strong women sleuths, don't miss this one-of-a-kind Ohio detective from a time in United States history when dames wore hats -- but seldom a Smith & Wesson.

How could a harmless raffle for the local hospital put the lives of seven people under threat from a crazed serial killer?

The town of Ockam is proud of its long history. Famed for forging weapons in various wars, its residents are sticklers for heritage and tradition.

When the town's Mayor, Bert ‘Slasher’ Harris, decides to choose the seven winners of a raffle in reverse order, the local crowd demand fair play.

As the angry mob becomes increasingly violent, the town’s most highly prized possession, the historic seven razors of Ockam, are stolen.

These seven cut-throat razors are each engraved with a day of the week... seven razors for seven attacks.

An anonymous killer is targeting the prize-winners, picking them off one day at a time.

It is up to Inspector Ralph Tomkins and Detective Constable Tony Finch to work out the identity of the slasher behind these seemingly unstoppable attacks before all the razors have been used.

Each target is kept under closely-watched police guard, yet the murders continue.

Can Inspector Tomkins and DC Finch find the killer before the week is up?

The Seven Razors of Ockam is a deftly-plotted thriller with moments of dark humour for the small-town Detective duo.

She soon discovers that the dead man was Murdo Macguire, a physicist, and that he and his colleagues were carrying out top secret work on particle collisions.

When more of the scientists are found dead, in the same place and manner as Macguire, it looks like someone has a vendetta against the project.

But what were the scientists working on?

And last that I found, whew (!), Amber Nine is the third in the Boysie Oakes series by John Gardner, which series is recommended by GA Russell in this post upthread. It is $0.99 for about 18 more hours before going up to $3.99.

But a straightforward mission start to go awry when his mark turns up dead without Boysie lifting a finger.

Who killed him? And why?

It is only when he is introduced to a sadistic finishing school, run by the mysterious and dangerous Doctor Klara Thirel, that the mystery starts to unravel.

Surrounded by troubled girls galore, including a certain Petronella Witching, Boysie is pulled into the biggest espionage foul-up of the century.

With the help of Petronella, as well as a handful of self-important, and at times incompetent secret agents, Boysie dives into the mysteries behind the dead Member of Parliament, the sexually charged finishing school, and – most of all – who and what is behind the top-secret Amber Nine.

Amber Nine’ is the third in the series of highly acclaimed comic novels featuring the cowardly secret agent, Boysie Oakes. It is perfect for fans of classic British spy fiction, including Ian Fleming, Len Deighton, and Desmond Bagley.

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including Maestro, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including Licence Renewed and Icebreaker. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

'Cool polished story-telling with all the sexy sidelines in the best James Bond tradition' Evening Standard

Stuart Kaminsky's The Big Silence is reduced to $0.99 at Amazon US, courtesy of Open Road Media. His books do show discounted from time-to-time from Open Road, usually just in time to destroy my resolve to watch my book budget more tightly....

http://www.amazon.com/The-Silence-Li.../dp/B00AYRI59C

This is the 6th in Kaminsky's Abe Lieberman series of police procedurals, originally released in 2000, featuring 60-something Jewish policeman Abe Lieberman, and his Irish parter Bill Hanrahan.
For those who aren't familiar, Kaminsky received a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 2006, and I can't think of anyone who deserved it more. His writing is dark, humorous, and full of hope, ethos & pathos.

Bellows Falls is the 8th in the Joe Gunther by Archer Mayor. It's on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 2 more days, before going up to $4.99. Mayor seems to cycle his books through Kindle sales/free and so if you are patient, you can probably pick up most of the series at reduced prices. I haven't seen this title on sale before, though.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Joe Gunther is seconded to the neighboring town of Bellows Falls to investigate harassment allegations against a fellow officer. What begins as a seemingly open-and-shut case comes to look more and more like a frame job as Gunther doggedly pursues the truth, and soon he finds himself feeling around the edges of a statewide drug distribution network. As always, Vermont itself is a major character in Mayor's writing, with Bellows Falls standing in for any number of slowly decaying once-proud mill towns.

"Mayor delivers another superb combination of case, characters and local color and brings it all to life without a wasted word."—Publishers Weekly

"His evocation of a tough, honest cop coping with everyday crime made worse by an unforgiving climate, and towns being brought to their knees by poverty, makes Mayor literally a man for all seasons and all places." — Elaine Budd, Hartford Courant

"The Ragman's Memory [...] is a very tough act to follow, but Mayor succeeds admirably here. As always, though, tiny, seemingly placid Vermont is the real star of the book ... Mayor makes the place come alive for readers from Seattle to Key West." -- Thomas Gaughan, Booklist

It's on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 2 1/2 more days before going up to $4.99.

“One of the best fictional detectives conjured up in years,” Library Journal

BLANCHE ON THE LAM

Barbara Neely’s Smart, Sassy and Groundbreaking Crime Novel
WINNER OF THE AGATHA, ANTHONY & MACAVITY AWARDS

Blanche White is a plump, feisty, middle-aged African-American housekeeper working for the genteel rich in North Carolina. But when an employer stiffs her, and her checks bounce, she goes on the lam, hiding out as a maid for a wealthy family at their summer home. That plan goes awry when there’s a murder and Blanche becomes the prime suspect. So she’s forced to use her savvy, her sharp wit, and her old-girl network of domestic workers to discover the truth and save her own skin. Along the way, she lays bare the quirks of southern society with humor, irony, and a biting commentary that makes her one of the most memorable and original characters ever to appear in mystery fiction.

“Blanche not only solves the crime, but exhibits familiar foibles and strengths, believes in kitchen-table wisdom, and possesses a wicked sense of humor,” Ms. Magazine
