Conrad, Joseph: Heart of Darkness, v.1, 18 Dec 2007.

A classic from 1902.

From Wikipedia:
“Arguably Conrad’s most influential work remains Heart of Darkness, to which many have been introduced by Francis Ford Coppola’s film, Apocalypse Now, inspired by Conrad’s novella and set during the Vietnam War. The themes of Heart of Darkness, and the depiction of a journey into the darkness of the human psyche, still resonate with modern readers.”

However, the work has been criticised for de-humanising Africans. Although set in the Congo, there are no named African characters. (Incidentally, there are several uses of the N-word).

It has also been criticised for an unrealistic depiction of women. The narrator, Marlow, says, “It’s queer how out of touch with truth women are.” He goes on to claim that women need to be protected from the truth, to keep their little world from “shattering before the first sunset.” The only female character is also un-named, and is referred to as ‘My Intended’.
