Many USB devices are formatted FAT16 and have a low limit on the number of files/folders permitted in the root. Does the root of the USB have very many files in it?

I had 3 folders and 25 items. I've reduced it to just the 3 folders.

Some USB thumb drives have little slider switches to write protect the drive. Did you perhaps activate such a switch by accident?

That should not be a problem. There were many fake USB flash drives sold on ebay that have less capacity than claimed. Try storing data on it with another program. Also, it could be a hardware problem. Try another USB port.

Since it won't take much time I would back up the books and reformat as FAT32 then restore the files and see if it makes a difference.
