I've had two replacement Kindles and both were refurbished. I know that because they told me. I couldn't have told it from the Kindle. They were identical to the new ones.

I've also bought a couple of refurbished Kindles. They don't give much off on them. I think one was $20 cheaper and the other one was during a sale so it was a little cheaper than that. Both came with 1 year warranties just like the new ones.

I think for Kindles "refurbished" means something a little different than it does for other things.

I think many of the Kindles Amazon offers as "refurbished" are actually "unboxed and returned, all within the first 30 days".

You are probably right.
You cannot sell the same thing as new twice. It irritates the "Inventory Control Specialist".
These days better known as a computer.

I think the main problem i that it isn't, in fact, new.

Something that has been used for two seconds is still not "new". It bugs the legal department to say that it is anyway, no matter how true in practicality it is.

Offering unboxed but in practice new devices as "refurbished exchanges" is a good way to build customer loyalty through being generous (coming and going), while at the same time doing something with all those devices that they can't really call "new" for legal reasons.

Well the replacement came, it had many dust specks beneath the screen in the lower half, and also had a severe yellow gradient. Have already asked for another, sending this one back! I'm picky but Amazon allows me to be, so might as well take advantage.
