Me too -- I was also rather shocked about his age. I had estimated him, eh, somewhat younger.

I feel really bad, in part because although I've had the intention for years, I've never read any of the works of my namesake. From everything I've heard, he was quite a funny writer.

Mr. Sharpe, I'm sorry it took this to nudge me to do it, but I just bought your Indecent Exposure. Rest in peace.

One of my favorite humorous authors. I've read everything he's written.

RIP, Mr. Sharpe. Thanks for the laughs.

Likewise, starting with his two devastating attacks on the (then) South African regime.

Yes, Riotous Assembly is the book of his I remember with most fondness - even more so than the better known Wilt books.

What was the other South African one, by the way? I can't remember.

Don't know this author. Still, R.I.P.

I'll add him to my "read at some point" list as he seems to be highly regarded.

"Indecent Exposure" is the other South African one.

Both two of his best.
Another two are the first pair of Wilt novels - "Wilt", and "The Wilt Alternative". The following Wilt based ones are relatively disappointing.

His best really use his experiences in South Africa and teaching in a Polytechnic in the UK.... classes of groups like 'Meat One' for a bunch of butchers' apprentices and so forth.

edited for ps.
just read the Guardian feature on him - I'd forgotten about "Porterhouse Blue"... another excellent one of his, based on (inspired by?) his time at Cambridge University.

The one book of his I remember best is "The Throwback," read it in high school many years ago.
