Is it just me or does the Library Journal review contain a spoiler? I've never noticed them doing that before, the amazon blurb doesn't mention it, it seems to me to be a key piece of information.

Now that you mention it, I think it does contain a spoiler. The Amazon description contains no spoilers, but the Library Journal review is right under it.

Free right now:

The Night of Knives by Jon Evans. First published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd., 2007

http://www.amazon.com/The-Night-of-K...mm_kin_title_0

Quote:
Veronica Kelly came to Africa to start her life over. Still reeling from her divorce, she is grateful when a handsome stranger invites her to join a tour to visit gorillas in Uganda's wild Impenetrable Forest. A trip that goes desperately wrong when their group is captured by brutal gunmen.

Then one tourist is executed

And then another.

This is no random kidnapping: their abduction is only the first move in a deadly strategic game. A game in which Veronica's ex-husband is somehow involved.
Now she must embark on a wild journey across Africa, to unveil a malignant conspiracy before it consumes entire nations - and thousands of lives...

"Evans's plots positively teem with well-drawn characters and terse, well-controlled dialogue. There are plenty of twists and turns and the non-stop action is guaranteed to leave readers breathless." -- Lancashire Evening Post

"Full of twists and turns, this high-concept, high-adrenalin thriller bests most of what has been produced out of Hollywood in recent years. A must read for action junkies everywhere." -- South Coast Register (Australia)

First published in England in 1984 by Martin Secker & Warburg:

(The Amazon product page seems to confuse this in part with Colin Watson's Flaxborough 'Blue Monday' and lists Watson's author bio, but the book is Dunne's.)

Blue Murder (A Classic Cold War Thriller) by Colin Dunne

“Our line of work? If it was a department store, you’d go straight through Military, turn left at Espionage, and you’d find us on the right, just past Crime.”

Meet Yokel and Kit, the two most maverick spies ever to work on the payroll of British intelligence. Members of the Unit, a top-secret, black-ops team working behind the most dangerous lines of the Cold War, they are sent into East Germany, at the height of mid-1980s hostilities between the mighty powers of East and West.

But the mission goes horribly wrong and they find themselves thrown into a conspiracy of terrifying proportions. Abandoned and alone, they must fight, not only to finish the job, but also for their own survival.

Stretching from Germany's Harz Mountains, to the brothels of Bangkok, to the mean streets of London's East End, the two men race into a hair-raising global journey that will keep the reader gripped from the first page to the last.

Colin Dunne’s classic Cold War thriller is a master-class of light-touch thriller writing that combines the pace and tension of Jack Higgins with the wit and intelligence of Len Deighton and the sophistication and style of Ian Fleming.

Colin Dunne’s writing has been widely praised.

'Cleverly plotted and genuinely witty’ (Jack Higgins)

‘Crisp characters, amazing pace, every low punch in the book on target’

Blue Murder is listed as one of Colin Watson's titles at Fantastic Fiction and on the wiki page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Watson_%28writer%29 - which is probably a part of the confusion. Dunne isn't nearly as prolific or well known (this is assuming that Amazon linked in the author page and that the publisher didn't just screw it up themselves).

Endeavour's website is a mess - no author list or titles list, just a running blog-like listing of books.

Steroid Blues by Richard LaPlante is free. Second in the Fogarty-Tanaka series, the first of which was free awhile back.

Quote:
John Winston Flint, prominent Philadelphia physician, has been systematically tortured to death. Every bone in his body has been shattered—even the joints of his fingers and toes reduced to powder.

The doctor’s hidden side is revealed when a police search turns up a collection of sadomasochistic videos in which Flint himself was the star performer—and horrifyingly, one shows a brutal rape and apparent murder.

Fogarty and his friend and colleague, medical examiner Josef Tanaka, also discover that Flint was selling massive quantities of illegal steroids to hardcore bodybuilders. In a world where total physical prowess is the ultimate goal, and strength truly equals power, performance-enhancing chemicals are more than worth their weight in gold.

Nothing in Fogarty’s experience has prepared him for this case, where each secret he uncovers seems to lead him farther from the truth, and where the darkest secret of all is written in the blood of two drug-enhanced, steroid supermen.

Another freebie thriller by Humphrey Hawksley from Endeavor Press - Ceremony of Innocence.

Quote:
Mike McKillop was once a respected Hong Kong policeman. But now, living alone after his Chinese wife disappeared to the mainland with their two children, he is a pen-pusher, wallowing in alcoholic self-pity.

He thinks the glory days are long over.

But the past is about to catch up with him.

In Beijing for an international conference on corruption, McKillop receives a call from Clem Watkins, a CIA pal he hasn't seen since the night his best friend was murdered years earlier.

Watkins warns him that there is something is happening at Heshui, a secret missile base near the Korean border.

McKillop is suddenly thrown into a vast conspiracy, involving the British, Chinese and US intelligence agencies. A deadly game of geo-political chess is about to unfold - in which no one is innocent.

And McKillop will have to learn how to be a policeman again - if he is to stay alive, and save the family he lost years ago.

IIRC, I think Library Journal reviews tend to have more spoilers. From what I remember, it's because they're written for librarians, who won't have the time to read the books but who need the spoilers when it comes go recomending the books. ("Jane might like this book. Oh, wait, the LJ review says the ghosts turn out to be fake, and she hates those stories...")

Ummm, really? Must be some small town librarians.

I always thought they did that so that the librarian could fake that she'd read it (like mini-cliff notes).

I don't think I ever had a librarian recommend a title, after I was, say, old enough to read, at which point I picked them out myself (librarians recommended the worst possible reading, in my experience, despite having lots of great things to read at their fingertips, which they apparently never opened).

We frequent 3 libraries. At one, the librarians are very friendly, and perfectly willing to discuss a particular book & make recommendations-- making that library, of course, my preferred one despite it's smaller size. Some winners, some losers (for me), but without a doubt better than analyzing the dust jacket blurb with no other input.
I've never had any worthwhile interaction from major book store chains, either. But I've had great advice from specialty bookshops & used book stores, and found authors that I really enjoy.

Free novella by Ray Banks Gun. Originally published by Crime Express.

It's a simple enough job for a very dangerous man - go to the Leam Lane estate, pick up a converted air pistol from a guy called Florida Al, bring it back in one piece. Another freebie from Endeavor Press by Juval Aviv - The Asset.

Quote:
The year is 1989. The Cold War is reaching its final dramatic climax when Max Robertson, the greatest media tycoon of the age, suddenly dies, apparently committing suicide on his luxury yacht.

Six months later the Mossad assassin Sam Woolfman finds himself on a job that goes badly wrong. As he is forced out of 'the bureau', his retirement fund vanishes, and he finds himself a broken and bankrupt man.

Woolfman is thrown one last chance to get his life back on track - find out what happened to Robertson and his missing millions.

An intelligence asset sent to find a financial one.

But five men who tried to find out what happened to Robertson have already died.

As he starts an investigation that takes him across Europe, and into the heart of a disintegrating Soviet Union, Sam discovers that Robertson may not even be dead.

And when the truth of his 'suicide' is discovred, the last great secret of the Cold War will be revealed - toppling governments, and throwing the global economy into chaos.

http://www.amazon.com/Tropic-of-Fear...N%3DB009MAO6WC

Quote:
Diane Lang, a professor of German from Yale, was in Paraguay to conduct research on the Mennonite settlements in the green hell called the Chaco. Walter Stanek, a hydrogeologist from Arizona, was in country for what he thought was a disaster-prevention project in Asunción and an environmental impact study for the proposed Corpus dam on the Paraná river. So how did they get caught between rebel forces and the secret police under Colonel Hector Ibarras, a man with designs on power? It all started with an encounter at the Club Bahia Negra and a late night attack on the dusty, unpaved road of a nearby shantytown—and it ended with the two Americans struggling to survive while forced to play a pivotal role in a plot to overthrow the government of General Enrico Zancon.
