Best way to buy a book
I came across this on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comm..._way_to_buy_a/
Apperently, best way to buy a book if we want the author to profit is ebooks. Admittedly, writers earn more with hardcovers, buy they are a bit pricy. Therefore three ebooks we buy at the price of one hardcover sends more their way. It seems ebooks are win-win for everyone involved indeed. Cheaper prices for us, more profit for the author, easier to read and carry. |

It depends who publishes them. Corporations have screwed authors on ebook royalties, they only get 25% of net. Whereas with realbooks it's typically 40%. So most of the extra profit from cost savings just goes to the publisher.

Typically it is closer to 17% of *cover price* on tradpub hardcovers, about half of that on paperbacks. Retailer discounts typically run 40-45% so the publisher gets about double what the author (+agent) gets.
Tradpub ebooks it is nominally 25% of net so the publisher gets triple the author (+agent) take. Retailers seem to be getting 30% of the consumer price. Buying ebooks direct from an author's website nets them 90%+. Buying ebooks from a retailer nets the author/publisher 35%-65% depending on price and the retailer, most typically 65-70%.
