Best way to buy a book

I came across this on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comm..._way_to_buy_a/

Apperently, best way to buy a book if we want the author to profit is ebooks. Admittedly, writers earn more with hardcovers, buy they are a bit pricy. Therefore three ebooks we buy at the price of one hardcover sends more their way.

It seems ebooks are win-win for everyone involved indeed. Cheaper prices for us, more profit for the author, easier to read and carry.

It depends who publishes them. Corporations have screwed authors on ebook royalties, they only get 25% of net. Whereas with realbooks it's typically 40%. So most of the extra profit from cost savings just goes to the publisher.

Typically it is closer to 17% of *cover price* on tradpub hardcovers, about half of that on paperbacks. Retailer discounts typically run 40-45% so the publisher gets about double what the author (+agent) gets.
Tradpub ebooks it is nominally 25% of net so the publisher gets triple the author (+agent) take. Retailers seem to be getting 30% of the consumer price.

Buying ebooks direct from an author's website nets them 90%+.
Buying ebooks from a retailer nets the author/publisher 35%-65% depending on price and the retailer, most typically 65-70%.

Exactly fjtorres. I used to think buying hardcovers were the better medium for authors also. It was only recently (especially with the articles I've read and sites I've religiously checked) that I realized ebooks are better. Win-win because it's more practical also for the user
