PRS-900 specifications are up

See here.
Some interesting bits:

Screen Size : Vizplex™ 7.1 inches

Rechargeable Battery Pack
...
I wonder what that is. An extra user-replaceable battery?
There's also a link to "Owner's Manual" but right now it's just a one-page map of the wireless coverage.

Edit: the notice now says "Temporarily out of stock.". I think it was "Preorder" before, so does that mean that release is coming soon?

If you click the preorder button it puts the 900 in your cart and takes you to the Sony warranty page where you can choose a warranty plan up to 4 years ($130).

If they don't lower that 399 price tag, they'll be eaten alive. The kindle is 140 dollars cheaper and the drs800g offers a larger, clearer screen for the same price. Heck you could get a refurb DX for the same price.

Note that, as it looked from the photos of the unit, the aspect ratio is not the 3:4 one you have on other units. So the 7.1 inch figure makes it seem "more larger" than it actually is. This unit (doing a little high school math) will have a screen size of roughly 3.6 by 6.1 inches. But a "real" 7.1 inch screen-- meaning one keeping the 3:4 aspect ratio of other e-paper readers-- would have a resolution of 768x1024 and a screen size of 4.6 by 6.1 inches. So you are losing a full inch of screen width from what is implied by the listed diagonal measurement.

I actually think this form factor might be better than 3:4. Maybe it will win out in the long run, like 16:9 on desktops?

An 8.5x11 sheet of paper has an aspect ratio of 1.3:1, or very close to 4:3. Viewing PDFs or other documents formatted to match an 8.5x11 page would be the same size on this 7.1 inch reader as they are on a "normal" 6 inch reader. The 900 will only be able to show more text on screen at once, not larger text.

Six font sizes, but the new one is XS and S is still the PDF font size without reflow. Presumably other formats have six sizes too.

It is not designed to be a 3:4 or 4:3 screen. It is designed to allow you to see a partial page of a PDF document in landscape mode without the bulk and crappyness of a Kindle DX. (In other words, it is designed to read two columns of text in landscape mode.) It is really a good design if the software is good. Current Sony models have terrible landscape support because they grey out the text on the part of the page adjacent to the part you are reading. It is a simple fix if sony would just do it.

In portrait mode it will allow you to read single column books but the page will be longer than tradition Sony readers or K and K2. Current models use 600 pixels wide (portrait) and 800 pixels high (landscape). The 900 will extend that to 600 pixels wide (portrait) and 1024 pixels high (landscape). That is a 28 percent increase in landscape viewing screen which should greatly improve viewing of two column text in landscape mode.

The Kindle line does not handle ePub. So that makes them a no go. The DR800G is going to be $50 more and I think the battery life on the 900 will be better.

Any Update on when they will hit the Sony Store??? On previous models' initial release the Sony Stores were the first to get Demo units. I might have to drive down to our store here in Vegas to find out what skuttlebut (sp?) they are willing to hand out.

Or not. Can you point to an ebook that you can get in ePub that you can't get for the Kindle... please?

Because if you can't I think your comment is just FUD.
