CeBIT Video: Asus DR-900

Asus is showing this 9″ e-reader that uses SiPix and comes with a pretty cool capacitative touch screen for navigation, text input and more. It will come in WiFi and GSM versions.

Nice video thanks. The SiPix looks very fast.... and seems to have better contrast than eInk... at least on the video... is that what you saw? Also, there didn't seem to be that flash to black to clear the screen... is that not needed on the SiPix screens?

Engadget has a hands on article/video also:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/a...%28Engadget%29

ERM: They say it has an eInk screen... which I think is wrong. They also say how "slow" it is... well... slow compared to an LCD perhaps.

I definitely saw a flash, but it was much faster.

Also, it was using partial-screen updates for UI navigation and in the apps

(And yes, Engadget are wrong again)

This does look great! I wouldn't mind complementing my Sony with this. Seems worthy of my interest so far.

Actually, I just think it took a second to respond. People compare every touch screen to the iPod Touch...

Course... I wasn't the one touching it... but she was wrong on a few other points.

I figured ASUS would be bringing out more cool stuff soon, they are a very experienced hardware maker. The screen clarity looks incredible, and if it is capacitive touchscreen it would be nice and responsive. In the video they had a couple of dud touches which was a bit of a worry though, but it may have just been the ineptness of the french guy.

The refreshes are very slow compared to LCD, but that's just one of the tradeoffs of an e-ink screen we put up with, nothing unusual there. Looks like 'another' Kindle DX killer.

There's another large screen ebook reader for $400 that recently made its debut. This appears to blow that one away.

The SiPix screen is 9" and 768 × 1024 pixels (the EInk Vizplex 9.7" screen is 825 × 1200 pixels). This is the same screen as the Hanlin A9 in the E-book Reader Matrix, the Kindle DX in the Matrix uses the 9.7" screen.

I don't notice a difference compared to my Boox, except maybe on first page turn after a wait. Background looked smoother than E-Ink, but hard to tell without a side-by-side comparison. And it still flashes, but does a white out instead of inversion.

I think they need to work on that interface though, it makes the iLiad look fashionable.

Looks pretty much as expected. They claimed to have other devices in the works...so hopefully there will be a faster, better one later. If they go all half-assed with Sipix in all their products, I'll be a bit disappointed.
