I really liked the description of the Samar action in Pacific Glory. Deutermann's father was a destroyer division commander in Halsey's fleet, and Deutermann himself had a long career in destroyers himself, so it's likely a realistic portrayal.

Did you read Deutermann's forward (or afterword) about him meeting Nimitz? I enjoyed that too.

I finished Beau Ideal, the third book in the "Beau" series by P.C. Wren which begins with the much better known Beau Geste. In my opinion, this novel is actually the best of the three, being more coherent than the others and with a shade of darkness in the situation of the main character. It has the usual assumed colonial racism, unconscious sexism, and absurd chauvinistic devotion to "DUTY" and the "stiff upper lip" but does provide an interesting and exciting adventure story despite all that.

Everyone should be required to read about the Battle Off Samar in which 6 Escourt Carriers, three Destroyers and 4 Destroyer Escourts attacke a Japanese Task Group consisting of Battle Ships and Cruisers, including the Yamato. The Escourt Carriers retreated to launch thier aircraft while the Destroyers and Escourt Destoryers attacked to covver them. They are credited with driving off the Japanese, thus preventing them from getting in amongst the Troop and Supply Ships at Leyte Gulf.
They lost two escort carriers, two destroyers, a destroyer escort and many of aircraft. They sank or disabled, in exchange for the heavy losses for such a small force, three Japanese cruisers. Apache |

I'm currently reading David Peace's new book Red or Dead. It's about Bill Shankly, legendary manager of Liverpool Football Club. It's very good so far, the style is self-consciously epic which suits the subject.

Just finished a re-read of an old friend: "Pawn of Prophecy" by David Eddings, the first book of the "Belgariad". One of my all-time favourite books, and one which I try to re-visit every few years. This is, I should add, the first time I've read it as an ebook, and the ebook is pretty good. Nicely formatted and very few errors.
It's books like this which make the attitude of "I never re-read books" incomprehensible to me. |

I find that a chapter or two in I remember the ending, and that is fine. But as it goes on I remember more and more, and instead of that comforting feeling of familiarity I get restless and bored. Not intentional I assure you. And if I am re-reading a book it is often because I have hung onto it because I enjoyed it the first time, although sometimes it is accidental. There have been times I wish I could enjoy rereading because I have lived in small northern communities where books were scarce and other forms of entertainment were even scarcer. We are talking one horse towns here where the horse is dead and buried. But overall there are far too many books available that I want to read these days. I will never get to read them all. But I can't really complain about that Enjoy your reading however you choose to do it. Helen |

I dont re-read because there are always new interesting books to read. Simple as that.
It's not an attitude as the poster above said, it's lack of time and too many exciting new choices. I may re-read chapter or two, but whole book, I have no time for. Speaking of reading choices, I'm finishing Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy, with 100 pages to go...and than I thought about starting Assassin's Apprentice, first book of Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. |

Oddly enough, I think Pawn of Prophecy is a book I have read more than once, but I don't think I even own a copy any more. I felt like I could see the workings too much the second time: the travelogue plot with strong national stereotyping, and the regularity with which their enemies attack them to keep things lively. Also, if ever there was a series to put you off prophecies... It has been a very long time, though, and maybe I should try revisiting it, to see how it holds up. I'll get on to it after I finish these two hundred high priority TBRs. |

I, too, was thinking of re-reading "The Shining," in preparation for King's new novel.
