Dark Epic Fantasy
Can anyone recommend me some dark fantasy, that isn't paranormal romance. Benjamin Tate/Joshua Palmatier writes dark epic fantasy, and his books looks good. Any more in that darker vein?

The canonical exemplars would be:
- R.E. Howard --- Conan, Solomon Kane, Almüric, et. al. - Poul Anderson --- The Broken Sword and The Merman's Children - Michael Moorcock --- The Eternal Champion Cycle, esp. Elric You might also enjoy Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. |

I would say that Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy is a pretty dark and grim epic fantasy. It starts with "The Blade Itself".
I am also on book 5 (of 10) of Steven Erikson's 'Malazan, Book of the Fallen'. It is also dark and grim and definitely qualifies as epic fantasy. The first book is "Gardens of the Moon" |

Thanks for the suggestions. In Waterstones, they have a section for dark fantasy, and most of it seems to be fantasy romance, which I'm not into. The only other dark fantasy that I saw from my brief browse through was stuff by Clive Barker, but I don't know how good he is. Any other suggestions?

I'd second Joe Abercrombie. I'd also throw in Daniel Abraham's 'Long Price Quartet' into the category. George Martin's Song of Fire & Ice series is also dark, though perhaps not quite as gritty (and incomplete!).
