Hamilton, Ian: Staff Officer's Scrap-book, v1, 20 Nov 2008

This is a journal of sorts of observations by General Ian Hamilton made during the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. Some of his observations about warfare are prescient foreshadowing developments during World War I. His observations about British popular attitudes toward the Army demonstrate that the pacifist movement which became more commonplace after World War I did not spring out of nowhere. This work has been described as minor classic of military history. There is a second volume which I have not worked on up to this point.

Although a hero of the Boer War, General Hamilton was involved in command of the Gallipoli attack which failed miserably. Some biographies place the blame on him for the failure, but my reading would lead me to believe that he was to some degree a scapegoat for decisions made by others on the scene and in London.

This book is out of copyright in Canada since he died in 1947 and in the US because the book was written in 1905. It is probably in copyright elsewhere.
