Amazon not charging for conversions

As reported on the KindleKorner mailing list by member woody_woodward, Amazon has decided not to charge for converting and sending documents to the Kindle. This was mentioned in a Kindle Chronicles Podcast, and confirmed by customer service, with the usual "at this time" caveat.

wonder if not charging for PDF conversions has anything to do with competing with Sony's new software update? Can't imagine that the $.10 was worth the record keeping and costs of billing.

Amazon never have charged for conversions. The 10c fee was not for the conversion, but for wireless transmission to your Kindle. It was always free if you retrieved the converted document manually from your Kindle e-mail address.

As Harry states the cost is not for the conversion but for Whispernet delivery. This information is still in a pop-up box ont he Manage Your Kindle page.

Quote:
Individual charges include e-mailed document charges to cover wireless delivery ($.10 per e-mailed document attachment). Your credit card will be charged when you have accrued at least $3.00 in total charges, or 30 e-mailed documents.
I have yet to reach 30 emailed documents and use the free yourkindlename@free.kindle.com address much more often.

Yes. I know the charge was actually for sending the document off to the Kindle via Whispernet, but when the topic is being discussed it's more often described as a conversion service. That's why I said "converting and sending documents." I was trying to avoid splitting hairs while referring to the service the way many people thought of it.

And personally, I use the whispernet delivery service almost exclusively. If I need to transfer a large amount of data I'll pop the SD card out and put the files on that.
