Social aspects of Reading

From http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2374118,00.asp

Quote:
The Kobo application for the iPad on Wednesday added "Reading Life," which brings social aspects - including sharing, a personal "book cover," and achievements - to reading.

...

Kobo has also added achievements, ranging from the "Once Upon a Time" achievement for opening the first book to 'The Twain' earned by those that read daily, and 'The Witching Hour' for readers who read into the wee hours of the night.
I wonder if we will see any of those on other platforms?

Great just what we need, more social crap. If I want social crap like that I'll go play StarCraft II. Personally book reading is NOT a social activity. In fact it's quite anti-social.

Actually, sticking out your tongue is anti-social --- unless you are a cat; then it's just cute

I happened to be at the Kobo presentation yesterday. While they seemed to like the ability (not requirement!) to post to FaceBook, the most useful or interesting to me would be the statistics, or maybe the awards. Of course right now you have to have an iPad, later an iPhone or smart phone. Since I don't have an iPad, I'll just have to wait until rev 39, when the Kobo eInk device gets all the stats gathering and can sync it to the desktop app under Linux...
