Conversion issue with zip of Warbreaker

Went to convert Warbreaker and received the following error message:

I don't think Calibre supports conversion of .doc files. Save it as RTF or HTML and try again.

I extracted the .doc file and saved as rtf. Received the following error:

rtf2lrf doesn't support RTF files that use non ascii characters. Save it to html in word instead.

Weird, I had no problem saving the .doc as .rtf and converting using calibre.

It depends on the generated RTF file. The original idea behind RTF was to represent special characters (this includes formatting/control as well as on english) using ansi escape sequences. But RTF also supports codepages (i.e. non ascii characters encoded in some code). Unfortunately rtf2lrf does not.
