The Economist recipe images are too large

I noticed that when I fetch The Economist the images look pixelized. I opened the same images on my computer just to realize that at 100% the are actually magnified by the factor 2. How can I customize the economist (free) recipe to shrink all the images to 50% (which in fact will be the actual size)?

This allows the image to be as large as the space provided, but no larger. I don't see any CSS in the free Economist, so I would expect the image to be full size, if it fits, not scaled up. However, if the OP has a default device set, the recipe will create images scaled for the screen size of that device. If he then views it on his computer - the image may have been sampled down for the device when the recipe EPUb was created, then scaled up when viewed on a larger computer screen. What device is set for the default? What device is he viewing the recipe on?
Code:
    extra_css='img {max-width:50%;}'
will produce smaller images, but he might be losing resolution due to the default device he's told Calibre he's using. (There may also be some internal style that's not getting stripped that may override some of this.)

That didn't help. There is some problem with the image file themselves. When I go to the website from where the economist is being downloaded (feed://feeds.feedburner.com/economist/full_print_edition) and I take any photo from an article, copy it to the desktop and open it (I use preview app on the mac) the image opens blurry on 100%. When I set zoom to 50% it looks sharp. The same happens on my Kindle DX. The images look exactly the same way as they do in preview on my mac when zoom is set to 100% (of course without color on kindle)

What didn't help? What did you try?

Where? What image file are you referring to? The one on the site, or the one in the EPUB after it is downloaded?

I did this.

I see the same image on the desktop as on the site. Both look the same to me.

A smaller image (with the same number of pixels) looks sharper than the larger version (with the same number of pixels). It is "sharper" but smaller. The image should normally open with one image pixel per display pixel, so you shouldn't see that effect unless you are expanding it somewhere when viewing at "100%". I see it open at one image pixel per display pixel on my desktop, using an image display program and in FireFox.
