Does iPad support non-drm PDF and ePUB?

I visited iPad's official site, but I couldn't get a clear and straightforward answer.

Does anyone know if iPad is able to read any non-drm PDF and ePUB files that are not purchased from apple's iBook store?

Thanks.

Apple's iBooks web page says:

And you can add free ePub titles to iTunes and sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad.
Related news stories have confirmed that "free" means DRM-free. The iPad will also have a shared file directory that will mount on your Mac or PC and this can reportedly be used for side loading DRM-free ePubs.

From what I have seen, 3rd party apps are typically used on the iPhone for PDFs. I assume the same will be true on the iPad. These should work for all DRM-free PDFs.

I really hope so. I intend to purchase it for reading free reports and such, and these are all in DRM-free PDF format. iPad is why I have not purchased a Kindle DX. Hopefully this will become a little clearer when user reviews are out.

The Mac has the Preview app which allows you to view/read PDF files. I'm not sure if the iPad will have that. The Safari might work.

However, there is an app I found for iPod Touch that I expect would work on the iPad...

http://www.mbrainsoftware.com/iPhone/Pdf/Pdf.htm

I am pretty sure that someone will do a PDF reader app for the iPad.

Actually, iPad does support non-DRM PDF in iBooks. You do not need to convert it to ePub.

And Safari does read pdf files on an iPad. However, if you are into reading pdf reports you really need to check out iAnnotate for the iPad. It costs $10 in the app store. It's markup abilities are fantastic, including its ability to send you a summary of just the text you highlighted when you are done marking up the article.

The iPad has no "built-in" ePub capabilities; you need to install an app in order to read books. There are a number of apps which will read DRM-free ePub files; the most popular ones are iBooks and Stanza. They both work very well.

The iPad has no trouble with either non-drm epub or pdf. The ibooks app is free and works well and for PDF I'd recommend the app GOODREADER. This is a very good app and will either let you view PDF's in the app or send them to the ibooks library where you can view them in the PDF section that's created next to the ePub library.

Adding ePubs can be done using Calibre or through itunes. Adding PDF's is done through itunes if you've got an app installed that can handle PDF output.

Ipad works just fine with PDFs...Just import them with Itunes or Calibre..Stanza is an extra step that is no longer needed...I read PDF magazines all the time works absolutely great on an IPAD....

You know very well that Stanza's rendering engine is substandard and most likely won't ever be fixed.

As for iBooks, it does a lot of things a bit wonky. And the forced large margins are not nice. Also, it doesn't respect embedded fonts and a number of other things.

Basically, if you want to view ePub that works better then iBooks or Stanza, use txtr or maybe Bluefire.
