epub to mobi conversion hangs

I'm having trouble converting some titles from epub to mobi.

The conversion seems to hang at 47%.

The last few lines in the progress trace are:
Transformed CSS selector h|span.BodyText2Char to h|span.bodytext2char
Transformed CSS selector h|span.msoIns to h|span.msoins
Transformed CSS selector h|span.msoDel to h|span.msodel
Transformed CSS selector h|div.Section1 to h|div.section1

The last attempt has been running for 40 minutes. The ebup file is 542kB.

I don't think it should be taking this long. Am I right?

The computer is a dual core AMD Athlon running Win 7. It's generally pretty fast.

Even though progress seems to be halted, one of the CPU's is at 75%. I assume that's the one doing the conversion.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

You have a epub that started its life in MS Word. This often creates very complicated css which is thousands of lines long. It is not hung at 47% as the progress trace indicates it is still working. If you leave the job details open you will see it progress. I have had conversions take 6 hours and many have reported longer.

Don't let the 47% confuse you it could go straight from 47% to complete or it might go to 67% for a while. Have patience it will complete in its own time.

Fortunately these long conversions are the exception and not the norm.

As an alternative, you can right click the book in Calibre and choose "Tweak Epub" and then "Explode Epub". This will take you to a temporary folder where you will find all the bits of your book. Open the contents folder and drag it into a "new book" in Mobipocket Creator, add the cover and fix the meta data. Then you can "Build" a prc version of the book. Sounds complicated, but it's not, takes just a couple of minutes.

cheers

First off it isn't always the contents folder, in my library it is rarely the contents folder. Also often the "contents" will be dozens of separate html files. I'm not familiar with mobipocket, are you saying it can take many html files as input and spit out a mobi book with all the parts as output? If so you learn something new everyday.

Yep, Mobipocket Creator Professional. Download free from Mobipocket website. You do need to be careful that the html files stay in the right order when you drag them into the publication window (but they are numbered sequentially). Every once in a while I find a html gets inserted in the wrong order, but you can drag the file or click on the move down button. It will also build you a TOC.

It's still generally much faster than letting Calibre run for an hour.

cheers

Yes. It finally completed. Took 80 minutes.

I added a second title to be converted and between the two CPU usage ran at 100%.

It would be nice if calibre had some way to limit CPU usage even if the conversion took a bit longer.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Go to Preferences - Behavior and change Job priority from Normal to Low. This will allow your computer to be responsive during the entire time.

Of 4300 epub files I've converted only 3 or 4 have taken a very long time to convert.
