Sony Reader #2 on Gadgets to go list

The Times editor Tom Dunmore compiled a list of important gadgets he'd bring on a trip. On top of his list is the iPhone, just followed by the Sony Reader (and a couple of other less meaningful gadgets)!

Quote:
Try as they might, scientists haven’t managed to better one of mankind’s most enduring technologies – paper. But the pain of carrying a library to the beach may soon be over, thanks to Sony’s new electronic book. The Reader’s revolutionary feature is its 6in screen, which uses E Ink technology that is as easy on the eye as newsprint and requires power only to change what it’s displaying – which extends battery life. The built-in memory will store 80 novels, which you can download from the internet. And when you grow weary of reading, you can use the reader to play MP3 music or audiobooks. The UK launch is expected later in the year.
Wait. Totally unrelated. A UK launch later in the year? Scoop!

He said "expected" -- there's a ways between that and "scheduled."

Foldable screens Electronic books such as the Sony Reader will have flexible screens – roll them away when not in use.
That is an improvement that would move the Reader to #1 spot in an instant. No more worries about cracking the screen open, the digital book can have what the paperbacks have enjoyed for a while now: tossability.

I'm not sure if I need a flexible screen if that means it'll be less balanced and harder to hold and control.
I'm still not certain that there are plastic that could be rolled up dozens of time per day and NOT show any sign of wearing.

Flexible and rollable screens are two different things. For example Plastic Logic displays are just flexible. I've had a flexible e-ink screen once in my hands, and it was far from being rollable.

We'll get both soon enough, but expect flexible first (at least if you want a pretty decent size).
